When I scan or copy, the sides of the scan or printed copy are good, but the center is just a broad band of colored streaks stretching the full length of the paper. If I print off my computer, it prints perfectly fine.

Here's an example of what I mean. Any ideas what the deal is? I wanted to use the feature yesterday, and it didn't work. It's literally the first time I ever used the scanner/copier part. I'd only used it as a printer til then.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
This happens both from the scanner glass and feeder?
Try the steps from here: https://support.hp.com/in-en/product/hp-officejet-8702-all-in-one-printer-series/9249466/document/c0...
Let me know if this helps.

Right. I tried both. First the feeder, and then thinking it would solve the problem, the glass. But the results were identical.

Check the scanner bar functionality: partially lift the scanner lid, and then press the Copy button or icon. If the scanner light does not illuminate or move across the glass.
