Hi @me3580,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're experiencing issues with scanning to your HP Photosmart 5520 where it says it's "unable to connect to computer," but you can print from the laptop to the printer, there are several troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue.

1. Check Printer and Computer Connection

  • Verify Connection: Ensure that your printer and computer are on the same network (if using Wi-Fi) or properly connected via USB.
  • Restart Devices: Restart both your printer and computer to refresh their connections.

2. Check HP Printer Software and Drivers

  1. HP Smart App: Open the HP Smart app (or download it from HP Smart) and check for any updates or fixes.
  2. HP Support Website: Go to the HP Support website and search for your HP Photosmart 5520. Download and install the latest printer drivers and software.
  3. Uninstall HP Software: Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, find your HP software, and uninstall it.
  4. Reinstall HP Software: Download the latest version of the HP printer software from the HP website and reinstall it.

3. Check Scan Settings

  1. Open the HP printer software on your computer.Select the Scan option and ensure that the scanner is properly set up and connected.
  2. Open HP Printer Assistant from the Start menu.Go to Scan and check if the settings are correct.
  3. Ensure that the scanner settings are not set to a different printer or scanner.

4. Update Windows and Printer Firmware

  1. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates. Install any available updates.Go to the HP Support website.Search for your printer model and check if there is any available firmware update. Download and install it if available.

5. Check Firewall and Antivirus Settings

  1. Ensure that your firewall is not blocking the printer's communication. Temporarily disable it to see if it resolves the issue.
  2. Temporarily disable your antivirus software to check if it's causing the issue. If it resolves the problem, you may need to configure the antivirus settings to allow the HP printer.

6. Use the HP Print and Scan Doctor

  1. Download the HP Print and Scan Doctor from the HP Support website.Run the tool and follow the on-screen instructions to diagnose and fix scanning issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
