HP ENVY Inspire 7958e All-in-One Printer

I scan a doc in my HP Envy Inspire using HP Smart on a Windows 11 HP laptop. I see the scanned doc in the app window. It gives me the option to save with a file name. Where does the file get saved? I don't see an option for folder. I save. The app closes it. Why does the app even close? I should be able to choose a folder. This doesn't make sense.

Hi @farshidk,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When you scan a document using the HP Smart app on Windows 11, the scanned file is typically saved to a default location unless you manually specify a folder during the saving process. Here’s a breakdown of what’s happening and how you can resolve the confusion.

Default Save Location

By default, the HP Smart app saves scanned documents to the "Documents" folder in your Windows user account. The exact path is usually:

C:\Users\[YourUsername]\Documents\Scanned Documents

If you don’t see the file there, it may also be in a subfolder or under a different directory depending on your app configuration.

Why Does the App Close?

The app closing after saving could be due to an unintended behavior, or it might be switching focus away from the scanned document preview. This is not standard behavior for most scanning workflows and could indicate:

  1. A glitch in the HP Smart app.
  2. An app setting that needs adjusting.

How to Specify a Folder or Change Settings

Change Save Settings in HP Smart:

  • Open HP Smart.
  • Go to the Settings (gear icon).
  • Look for options related to the Save Location or Scanned Documents. You may be able to specify a preferred folder here.

Save to a Custom Folder:

  • After scanning, when prompted to name the file, look for an option such as "Browse" or "Save As." This allows you to manually choose the destination folder.

Reinstall/Update HP Smart:

  • Ensure your HP Smart app is updated to the latest version from the Microsoft Store. If the issue persists, try reinstalling the app to resolve any glitches.

Use an Alternative Scanning Tool: If HP Smart continues to behave unpredictably, try scanning using the Windows Fax and Scan utility or the Windows Scan app:

  • Open Windows Scan from the Start Menu.
  • Select your printer and scan documents with full control over file naming and folder location.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
