Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.

This is the M1212nf MFP running on Windows 10 PC.  A vertical faint strip appears about 1 cm wide when copying using the flatbed laser scanner.  No problem when using the automated feed scanner for copying and no problem printing.  So the problem seems to be in the laser scanner under the glass flat bed.  I made a copy with nothing on the flatbed and the cover up and this is what it looks like.  That vertical strip is where the problem is on the copies.  Maybe I should just buy a new machine?Blank Copy.jpg

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

The vertical faint strip appearing on copies from the flatbed scanner suggests an issue with the scanner glass or the scanning sensor. Since the automatic document feeder (ADF) works fine, the problem is likely isolated to the flatbed scanning mechanism.

Steps to Fix the Issue:

Clean the Scanner Glass & Strip

  • Use a lint-free cloth and glass cleaner to wipe the scanner glass.
  • Pay special attention to the thin scanner strip near the edge—it may have dust or residue causing the faint strip.

Check for Scratches or Damage

  • Inspect the scanner glass for scratches or smudges.
  • If there’s a visible scratch, it may be causing the strip.

Run a Scanner Calibration

  • Some HP printers allow scanner calibration through the HP Toolbox or HP Smart.
  • Check your printer settings for a calibration option.

Update the firmware on an HP printer:

  • HP regularly releases new firmware versions for printer enhancements, app updates, or issue fixes. Update the firmware regularly to get the most out of your printer.
  • Click on the link below for step-by-step instructions on how to update the firmware of your printer:
    HP Printer Firmware Update Guide

Test with a Different Background

  • Try placing a black sheet of paper on the flatbed and scan again.
  • If the strip disappears, the issue may be related to light reflection inside the scanner.

Consider Repair or Replacement

  • If the issue persists, the scanner sensor may be failing.
  • Given the age of the printer, replacing the unit might be more cost-effective than repairing it.

Let me know if any of these steps help! If you’re considering a new machine, I can suggest reliable alternatives.

Thanks, I had tried all the other  suggestions and then I tried your black page test and now am going to buy a new machine - M140w.

Many thanks for your help!

You're very welcome! I'm glad the black page test helped you pinpoint the issue, even though it means moving on to a new machine.

The HP LaserJet M140w should be a solid upgrade—I hope it serves you well!

If you ever need help with setup, troubleshooting, or just optimizing its performance, you know where to find me. Happy printing! 🚀
