Hi @Adam19641, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The error message "Can't delete output file" when trying to start the scanner on your HP OfficeJet 5230 All-in-One Printer usually indicates an issue with file permissions, insufficient storage, or a conflict with the scanning software. Here are some troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue:

1. Check the Save Location Permissions

  • If you're scanning to a specific folder, ensure you have write permissions for that folder.
  • Try changing the save location to a different folder, such as Desktop or Documents.

2. Run HP Scan as Administrator

  • Right-click on HP Scan or HP Smart and choose Run as administrator.

3. Check Available Disk Space

  • Ensure you have enough free storage space on your PC.

4. Disable Read-Only or Security Restrictions

  • Navigate to the folder where scans are being saved.
  • Right-click on it, select Properties > General, and uncheck Read-Only if enabled.
  • Go to the Security tab, select your user account, and ensure you have Full Control permissions.

5. Restart Print Spooler Service

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Scroll down and find Print Spooler.
  3. Right-click it and select Restart.

6. Clear HP Scan Temp Files

  • Open File Explorer and go to: C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Local\Temp
  • Delete unnecessary temporary files.

7. Reinstall HP Scan and Printer Drivers

  • Uninstall HP Smart or HP Scan from Control Panel > Programs & Features.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Download and install the latest drivers from HP official website.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
