not a problem just frustrating

scanner worked properly last week now suddenly need to set up an account to do what I've always done.

The printer does not care about sign-in to use the hardware.

 

If you are asking about the sign-in requirement to use the HP Smart application:

HP Smart - the mobile and the Windows (and MacOS) versions - requires that you sign into the application using your HP Account credentials.  The option became a requirement starting at the end of 2020.

 

What else?

If you are scanning to / saving to / or accessing Cloud destinations while using the HP Smart application, then yes -- you must sign into that Cloud application / storage option to save / store content to the destination.

Why is the printer offline or not showing up in HP Smart?

For example:  Check network and Web Services requirements if the printer connection is lost when using Print Anywhere.

Note:

Printer discovery and status updates can take up to 45 seconds. If you are on a cellular or different wireless network, wait several seconds and try again. Swipe down on the HP Smart home screen to force a refresh.

  • Make sure the computer or mobile device is connected to a local or cellular network with internet access.
  • Connect the printer to a wireless network with internet access and make sure Web Services is enabled.
  • You signed into the HP Smart app with the same credentials used to claim the printer on the HP Smart website.
  • Android: Enable location permissions for the HP Smart app, and make sure the printer was added to the HP Smart app while using the same wireless network as your mobile device.

  • Disconnect from Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection before downloading.

 

  • Turn on Wi-Fi on your computer or mobile device and connect to your network. If the computer is connected to the network with an Ethernet cable, temporarily disconnect the cable and use the Wi-Fi connection during the setup.

 

  • Enable Bluetooth for an HP Smart app setup: Enable Bluetooth on your computer or mobile device so that HP Smart can detect the printer during the setup.  Source: How to scan with an HP printer > FAQ > Why can't I connect my wireless printer or scan over the network?

 

  • HP Smart requires that you sign into the application using your HP Account credentials.

 

  • When working through a browser to access HP Smart, be sure you have Cookies enabled.  If cookies are enabled and you are having trouble, clear Cache and Cookies.   And / Or … Try a different browser – assign that browser as the Default. (Note:  Chrome not working?  Use / Assign a different default browser.)

 

  • Where possible, HP Smart benefits (likes) having the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software installed.  For example, full driver provides access to Shortcuts and Printing Preferences.

 

  • Document includes the HP Smart application download links for Windows and Mobile devices, plus an FAQ section to assist with questions / issues.
    •  FAQ examples: 
      • What are the requirements to use the HP Smart app?
      • Which printers are compatible with the HP Smart app?
      • Why do I need to sign in or create an account to use the HP Smart app features?
      • Which languages does the HP Smart app support?
    • Older versions of the HP Smart app no longer support the required login feature.
    • Update the application to the latest version to access / use HP Smart

I found a solution that works for me.  I download the software I need for my printer using my old windows 8.1 pc.  Copy that downloaded software onto a USB stick.  Stick that USB stick into the new PC with windows 11.  Disconnect new PC from internet (might not be needed, but I did anyway).  Install printer software from USB stick.  Voila...no need for the cloud or some stupid app.

I only downloaded the scanning software by the way.  During the setup process, I selected the option "connect printer at a later time" or something like that, only because I did not want to connect my new pc to the internet before the installation was finished.

Now I can scan without having to login to the HP cloud.  I now have the same scanning desktop icon on my windows 11 PC as I have on my windows 8.1 PC.
