i have the exact same issue. i tried all these steps with windows 8.1 iso but didn't work. i use iso because i don't have the recovery partition copied. is there any other way to do so?

If it's a regular Windows 8.1 iso, it could work, but it will not be the same as WIMBOOT. I recommend you download the one in the link. Just format your USB flash drive to FAT32, then copy the Recovery contents to it.

Yes, the regular Windchill 8.1 OEM ISO will install and run okay but the license will not validate on the Stream since the BIOS SLIC key is for Windows 8.1 with Bing only.

Thanks travmaximilian!

I'd installed the Windows 10 preview and couldn't really get it to do much so I ignored my Stream for a few weeks.  When I came back to it I had no idea how to install new builds or recover to 8.1.  Your steps were invaluable.

thanks travmaximilian for your steps. i did have a recovery disk made. i got as far as selecting bootmgr.efi but after choosing the reset option next time, it shows the target OS as 'Windows 10'. am i doing something wrong? thanks in advance (:

quick update! despite showing the target OS as 'windows 10' (maybe that's what it should?) it did successfully restore to windows 8.1 as it came preinstalled. thanks again travmaximilian for the invaluable steps.

note: mine is a stream 8, so the same steps apply to it too

one last question. after recovering using the recovery drive, has the recovery partition been restored to the original hp 8.1? as i remember, it did repartition the hard drive during the recovery. but are the original contents restored to it? does windows 10 preview installation (done from web/windows update) mess up/delete the recovery partition in any way? i mean can i format the usb drive i used as a recovery drive and create a new recovery drive on a different usb drive or sdcard?

thank you (:

The target OS depends if your Windows 10 installation was successful or not. If it is, it will show Windows 10, if not then it will show whatever OS you had prior to the installation.

Yes, so the recovery partition will be remade after doing this. Windows 10 does not delete the recovery partition, although it could make extra system partitions if needed.
