I want to thank you for supplying the tools for me to upgrade my HP Pavillion dv6000 purchased at Costco to Windows 7. I especially liked the direction to update the bios prior to installing windows 7 and to install 4gb of ram. I'm up and running in 64 bit mode. I do have one question which I hope you can help me solve. Windows 7 is not making 4gb of ram available but only 2.99 gb. I noticed this when I started getting warning messages that I was low on memory. I checked basic info and it showed 4gb installed but only 2.99 gb used. I thought 64 bit os would see the entire 4 gb of ram.I checked my bios and there is not much to change. Bios shows total memory of 4096mb with version F.2e of bios installed. It does say factory installed Vista is the OS. I checked the performance tab of task manager and it shows the following physical memory: total 3062, cached 1454, available 1639 and free 272. At desktop I'm using 1.38 gb so not much more ram can be made available. Can someone explain what these ram numbers mean? Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening in a 64 bit system. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,

firstly the laptop u r using is too old.....so the total upgradable RAM memory is uptill 3 GB only. Although if you use more then 3 GB, then it won't consider the excess RAM.

Secondly, for windows 7 64 bit to run properly, the min RAM requirement is 4 GB (although the Microsoft says that min is 2 GB). YOu can even check this with any laptop manufacturer's website that the laptop's with 1 GB or 2 GB or 3 GB RAM come with pre loaded Windows 7 32 bit and laptops with 4 GB or higher RAM come with windows 7 64 bit. So the only thing is either you ignore the warnings or install windows 7 32 bit.

Hi!

I have Hp pavilion dv 9740 eo purchased in Sweden and recently I upgraded system to windows 7.

I tried to find appropriate nvidia drivers but after installation and after I restarted notebook screen goes to vga mod.

In device manager stay that windows stopped nvidia because some problems and there is mark Code 43.

I tried drivers from first page and it worked but that driver is from 2011.

I am trying to say is there any other way to use latest nvidia drivers ( and I tried several, didnt worked).

I was really disappointed when this situation occur and now I'm thinkig about downgrading to Vista.

Thanks on your help!

Hi,

In this model, the most important is to ensure that the appropriate temperature for all components (including graphics). That's why I do not update this driver for a long time. The driver for the Vista system was released in 2009, so here you have more up to date driver.

If however it is not important to you and you still want more recent driver then please tell me which Windows 7 version is installed on your model: 32-bit or 64-bit version?

Next go to:

Control Panel -> Device Manager -> Display adapters

Right click graphics and choose ' Properties '. Next select ' Details ' tab, use the dropdown selector to choose Hardware Ids and paste all the values from there to the next reply. This way I will be able to find out which drivers you need.

Below you've got example how to do it:

Thanks for reply but this isn't working.

As I said above after installation in device manager stay Code 43 for Nvidia 8400M GS and that is for all drivers from 300 series release.

Driver from first page of this topic is only functioning on windows 7 32 bit.

thanks for the post! SO MUCH INFO kinda overwhelming,,

I have dv9620 since new.. installed win7 32 bit, using none of the info given..

BUT:

remote control not working w/ windows medai player, which is ok..  does otrher functions still.

BIG PROB: Monitor was fine could it be the upgrade killed it? or windows updates? all fine for few weeks after upgrade.,.. .. i have another post on it i think its hardware.. but,, could it be the win 7 updates or drivers? external is fine..

I LOVE WIN 7 so much faster, quick boot, switching progtrams, no freezes. WAY BETTER THAN VISTA!!

meanwhile i will try to sift thru the posts here see if anything helps.

I keep my PC up off the base to prevnt overheating, made a sort of pedestal its got room for air to flow under it, without this stand it gets hot quick when playing music video.. basicaly took a piece of wood bit lager than PC and scwered 2  1X2 pieces of wood atop it like rails.., easy to make cheaper too! PC lifesaver!
