I can no longer add the solution to my previous post (copied below) about this issue of my scanner not working (via USB connection). So therefore I am adding this new post with my solution after almost giving up on this problem and having spent a lot of time trying to fix this. For me, it was not WIA settings as a suggested solution by expert Shlomil, nor different USB ports, nor reinstalled software. In the end the solution that worked for me was to reset the printer to factory settings via HP printer assistant > HP device toolbox > system > service > restore defaults. After that my windows 10 (upgrade) reconnected itself to my printer via usb port and yes finally my scanner is working again 🙂 I don't know which of the 'customer accessible settings' was causing the problem, but the reset to factory defaults solved it. The printer continues to work properly too after this reset to factory default. Just wanted to share this with HP community.
Previous posts: HP Laserjet Pro MFP M28W will not scan. Get message: unable to communicate with scanner. Scan doctor gets stuck in windows (wia) scan; detected a scan (wia) software problem, and it suggests each time to uninstall software, which i have now done several times but reinstalling software from the disc or with hp easy start does NOT solve this problem. Also found the thread on 'services' and checked WIA, RCP, Shell Hardware and all items are on automatic and running, so that does not seem to be the issue either.
