found this response by shlomi back in 2019 or even earlier maybe, used link and worked for me on 6/16/22 with a MacBook Air running macOS Monterey 12.3.1

 

Hi,

Generally the HP Laserjet 1020 printer is not copatible with any Mac OS version as lsited below:

As a workaround you may install an alternate driver as following:

  1. Connect the printer to your Mac and ensure it is power on and ready.
  2. Download and install the following drivers from apple:
    https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US
  3. Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  4. Click the plus sign and select the listed 1020 printer.
  5. Within the Use drop down menu click on Select Printer Software.
  6. Locate and select the HP Laseret 1022 model and press Add.

Now try printing with the newly created print queue.
