HP Recommended

I have the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740, and I want to use non-HP ink cartridges. While my printer will use the color cartridges (though it won't show levels), it will not use the black cartridge. Can anyone help me with this? It's my own printer, I should be able to put any brand ink in it I choose!
