ATA 402
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

We bought a Poly ATA 402, which we can reach and manage.

I connected the analog port of a USRobotics 56K FAX USB v.1.1.0 to physical port #1 on the Poly ATA.

We have logging turned on for the Poly ATA to a logging server.

When I make a call, the log below is what we get.  The same behavior on several different target numbers.  (Note I have replaced the actual phone number with (123) 456-7890 in the log.

The modem dials the call, it is answered by an identical modem on the other side, waits for at least 60 seconds, then hangs up.

Am I missing something on the Poly ATA configuration that is preventing this from working correctly?

This is the log from the poly:

Hello @cs11778 ,

welcome to the HP Poly community.

What is the other side that answers? A Fax or a Modem for a data connection?

I would try to disable compression as this would be using already SIP for the line which is already compressed depending on the codec used by the SIP provider this ATA is connected to.

Is this trying to use 56K as the speed or a lower speed?  Is there some sort of diagnostic on the modem end to see why it is not connecting?

Best Regards

Steffen Baier

Hello Steffen:

We actually have two other sites that have the exact same modem as this one (set up for answering), but they are using traditional POTS lines, not an ATA. Modem connections between these sites works fine. Connecting to either site from this central site with the ATA always fails (hangs up after a period of time, apparently negotiating)

All three modems are identical:

We use these as modems (pc to pc) ONLY, we don't use or care about the fax functionality.

I tried turning compression off on the modem settings in SecureCRT:

alpha.jpg

I also tried turning off compression on the modem itself (AT&K0)

I also tried fixed port speeds of 9600, 19200, 38400 and 57600 and 115200. These speed changes did not produce any different result.

This is the resulting call log from the ATA (the remote side still hangs up after a period of time):

Hi Steffen and others, anyone have any ideas of further things for me to check?

Hello @cs11778

who provides the SIP service? have you contacted them yet?

The next step would be opening a support ticket.

Best regards

Dialpad is our cloud VOIP service provider.  Dialpad does not directly support this device.

The POLY ATA has a section to put in your provider and then it autopopulates some fields.   We know that is enough to get it to dial out but there are other options we have left at default.

Please note that voice calls made with the POLY ATA work fine.  It's only modem communications we can't seem to get to work.

Also, this is the help screen from Dialpad:

Configuring a DECT or ATA Device (dialpad.com)

Screens from the ATA related to SIP:

codecprofilea.jpg

Is there any other portion of our POLY ATA configuration that would be relevant that I have not included here?

Hello @cs11778

I am no ObiHai ATA expert but G711, from memory, can only do a Max of 14400 speed. Maybe your provider is doing something on top of this.

I would check with Dialpad if they support 56K modems via an ATA and if yes, and no special settings are needed from their end, contact our support team.

Of course other volunteers are welcome to comment.

Best regards

So I'm still stuck, folks.   The ATA dials out, fails to negotiate with the remote modem.  I know the call is going out correctly and is being answered by the remote modem.   I've completely reset the CODECS page on our Poly ATA because disabling the G711A Codec (as suggested earlier in the thread) caused it to not dial out at all.

Source of call:  TAPI under SecureCRT

Dialing Agent:  Poly ATA 402

Receiving and dialing modems:  USRobotics 56K FAX USB v.1.1.10

Phone service provider:  Dialpad
