Hi Paul

I have some reading to do and some things to do. If you hear that an old man committed suicide in Northbrook, IL. you will know that it did not go well.

I will probably wait until I have the 8300 up and running before I shut this one down. I suspect, therefore, that it will be a few days before I contact you regarding  my success or failure. Regards and Have a good week.

Mike

Yes, it can sure be frustrating, but don't go to that extreme.  LOL!

I'm 300 miles downstate of you in O'Fallon, IL, a suburb of St. Louis.

You have a great week too, Mike.

Just an update

The graphic in the file concerning the CMOS reset was not the same as my. computer. There was no button on my CMOS battery. I decided to leave it alone.

I did change the Memory chips and substituted 4 each 8 GB chips for the 4 GB chips in the computer.

When I put everything back together, not only did the new RAM work correctly, but the escape button access to the UEFI settings menu also worked. So everything works correctly and I am a. more or less, happy camper. I guess I must have moved a cable or something

I now need to find a way to dual boot both my Ubuntu 20.4 and my Windows 10 from windows and adjust the EFI settings to boot from a bootable USB. I am still waiting on my 8300 motherboard. I am certain that I did not pay close enough attention and ordered the wrong board. Oh well, with the Cubs losing, I have something else to keep my attention.

Thanks again for all your help. I will let you the trials and tribulations of the 8300 as they develop.

Best Regards

Mike

You're very welcome, Mike.

For future reference, there is a little silver square with a yellow CMOS reset button on the motherboard.

It is not on the battery.

This is a picture of a HP 8200 Elite SFF motherboard, and I have circled in red where the location of the CMOS reset button is.

the 8300 sff can run 32gb but the memory modules used on the dimm must be a specific size (no high cap chips)

due to this limitation you should only buy ram from a memory dealer like crucial.com or amazon who have return policy

Thank a lot for the information. With all that I have been buying, this purchase will have to wait until the next round of Social Security.

Well it's me again. My question today concerns my 8300:

In the system information section, my computer is listed as using Legacy Bios. Does this information come from the motherboard or somewhere else. Can this be changed from Legacy to UEFI? I know the software can (I have AOMEI).

If the board can be changed, should I do it. For my purposes, Legacy seems acceptable.

Please advise at your leisure.

BTW The Cubs swept the Dodgers but I'd guess you are a Cardinals fan

Best Regards

if you have not played with the bios settings the 8300 elite,  HP defaults are UEFI enabled with Legacy (CSM) enabled

the defaults allow the system to try uefi first and if a uefi driver for the device is not found use Legacy mode driver

furthermore how windows is installed can affect things, was it installed in UEFI/GPT mode or Legacy mode the windows install disk/usb key can be one or the other but not both at the same time

Hi:

If you reinstall Windows by booting from the EFI or DVD boot source, and not the legacy boot source, the system information will show UEFI instead of legacy.

No need to change the system board.

Actually I am a NY Mets fan because I grew up in New Jersey, and lived just a few miles from NYC, until I joined the USCG when I was 24 years old.

However, when the Mets are not playing the Cardinals, or the NY Rangers are not playing the St. Louis Blues in hockey, I am a Cardinals and Blues fan.

I'd root for the Cubs before the Dodgers, so good going for the Cubbies.

They were the Brooklyn Dodgers when I was a little kid and my father was a huge NY Giants fan (before they moved to SF), so no one rooted for 'Dem bums' in our house.  LOL!

Thanks for the info.

I used to live in NYC and worked for Channel 5 (WNEW). When I first moved to NYC, I lived in Irvington. Coming out of South Carolina, It was, to say the least, a hell of a change.

Have a great day
