I'm going over the steps that NonSequitur777 has explained in this earlier thread while I wait for the parts to arrive: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Upgrading-HP-Pavilion-Gaming-De...
I'm curious about what the need is for the PSU adapter card? https://www.newegg.com/p/1DW-00GP-00276?Item=9SIAC85HD38420
If the separate PSU is only going to power the GPU, does it (the PSU) need to be plugged into the motherboard at all?
TIA!

Sure I can: for example, please take a look at this TG01 CPU heatsink upgrade YouTube vid: HP Pavilion TG01 Cooling Upgrade Noctua CPU Heat sink and Fan Install W/ How To 1, or the CPU heatsink upgrade I used for my HP Pavilion TP01-3xxx upgrade project, the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 90 SE White Dual-Towers CPU Cooler: Solved: Upgrading an HP Pavilion TP01-3003W (318K3AA) - Page 5 - HP Support Community - 9254350.

OK, the "ATX 24Pin to SATA 15Pin Dual PSU Adapter" has two plugs: the 24-pin ATX power plug for your ATX power supply and the 15-pin SATA power plug which connects the ATX power supply to the motherboard in order to synchronize powering up or powering down the ATX power supply when you power on/off your PC. When you use this adapter, you'll still need to keep your original HP power supply in place, as it will power the rest of your PC and of course delivering up to 75-watt to your PCIe x16 slot.
This method is only relevant for PCs for which there is not an ATX power adapter such as this example for an HP Z240 Workstation, where this specific HP Z240 ATX power adapter will replace the original power supply.
The synchronization of the ATX power supply is very important to avoid electrical issues as the graphics card, powered by the ATX power supply, needs to receive power at the same time the rest of the PC is powered on, and needs to shut down at the same time the PC is powered off.

Perfect explanation. Thanks, looking forward to not wondering if the PSU is causing issues. I did upgrade to the 500W HP PSU but adding a modular Corsair 650 gold for just the new GPU (4070 ti Super) should circumvent any power supply problem.
Appreciate all you're doing here.

Perhaps you can clarify the following for me:
The system SKU you provided (8BG56AV) refers to an HP Pavilion with Intel chipset H470 -at least according to PartSurfer, which are for 10th gen Intel Core processors, whereas looking at the TG01-0xxx Userbenchmark link, it shows that these PCs are fitted with either the Rother motherboard (SSID: 8653) for 9th gen Intel Core processors, or the Erica motherboard (SSID: 8643) for Ryzen processors?

Perchance you got an HP Pavilion TG01-1xxx fitted with the Baker motherboard (SSID: 8767)?

Btw, the Baker motherboard is compatible with the 95-watt TDP "K" 10th gen processors, such as the i7-10700K/F and the i9-10900K/F, like this HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop TG01-1xxx shows: HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop TG01-1xxx Performance Results - UserBenchmark.
Of course, given the higher processor TDP, additional cooling solution(s) may be necessary, including using a non-HP CPU heatsink like I did for my HP Pavilion TP01-3003w upgrade project.
