OMEN 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-b1000 (4Z7U0AV)

Hi,

this is a follow up from the post at the community forum  regarding a RAM upgrade to my Omen Laptop

I have spoken with Crucial and they gave me the model that would suit my HP OMEN 16-b1016ns [CMSX32GX5M2A4800C40}
so I went and bought it on Amazon and replaced it having all the care necessary like anti static connection etc.

I closed the computer and powered it up.
First of all I saw some message that was too fast to read and I think it was about BIOS but according to HP PC Hardware Diagnostics WIndows 2.6.3.0 BIOS is Up to Date.

Windows 11 home loaded fine and I went and see if the RAM was recognized and 32.0 GB (31.7 GB usable) were there.
Next on Task Manager > Performance > Memory it was also set and with 32GB

Windows Memory Diagnostic check also run and passed.

Then it became freeze in, freeze in. Like every 10 to 30 minutes

Ran "mdsched.exe" while rebooting and asked for 2 passes on normal settings Passed
on 3 passes extreme setting fails and stops at 1st pass on 21%

----

Said to myself lets run on safe boot sfc /scannow (fixed some errors)
after DISM and all was ok

----
Freezes became less frequent but after a couple of hours and yet again freezed

I saw this article at Crucial and I got to askif my motherboard is up to date (I usually am very careful) and have everything updated
BIOS is also
One question though, where do I find this page and my computer manual with the CMOS reset would be great also

So regarding my Omen Laptop (see link above with full specs) what should I do now
Run MemTest86?
Remove each module and try with each single one looking to see if one is faulty, running MemTest86 on each alone?

I am really lost here and for the past 3 days I haven't been able to do any work
So if can someone help out I would be very thankful

Hi:

Below is the link to the driver page for your notebook's model series:

The most recent BIOS update available is F.19.

Below is the link to the service manual.  There is no procedure to reset the CMOS.

Maintenance and Service Guide (hp.com)

There is a procedure to perform a hard reset which is similar.

I would definitely recommend that you run the Windows memory test because it may be possible one of the memory chips is defective.

I would first do it with both chips installed because within 10 - 15 seconds of running the test, it will report a hardware issue with a memory chip that is faulty.

It will not tell you which one is bad, but if you don't get an error that quickly, there would be no point in disassembling the notebook to test each chip individually.

If you do get a failure notice, then you will have to test each chip separately to determine which memory chip is no good.

I want to point out that usually if a memory chip is faulty, you get BSOD errors which a memory stop code of some sort.

Hopefully, it will be something simple like one of the memory chips is defective.

Hi again Paul and thanks for lending me a hand here.

I went to check the HP PC Hardware diagnostics and when I run it to see if BIOS is updated it says it is. But it is not my laptop has F.15 and indeed in the support page and your link it says it is F.19

So I did ot the easy way:
Run it using the HP tool to install.... do all the steps and then a surprise "HPWINGUI" There is not enough free disk space to complete the System BIOS and Device Firmware update operation. Delete some files to free disk space and try again.

Currently I have 707GB free

Then I did the hard reset and tried again, no luck also.
Is there something here I am missing or from F.15 to F.19 needs other installations
Sorry to ask but even doing a USB of the F.19 and running from it didn't solve anything

Thanks again

You're very welcome.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to fix that problem but seems to happen every now and then.
