HP Elitedesk 800 G4 sff
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I recently acquired a HP Elitedesk G4 SFF. After cleaning it up it runs perfectly fine, however the RTX a2000 that I bought to install in it just has its fans run at full speed upon boot and doesn't display video. While the card is slotted into the pcie slot the integrated graphics are still the primary video out source. I know the graphics card works because I tested it in my custom PC.

I know other users have gotten this card and similar cards to run. So I was wondering if there's any settings in the bios I need to set up so that the card will be detected?

@CAS97,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

This is what I would try first.

Without your RTX A2000 card installed, download DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) from here: https://www.wagnardsoft.com/DDU/download/DDU%20v18.0.6.2.exe -this is the newest version (DDU v18.0.6.2), and run it.  No need to run in save mode, btw.

Then download the Nvidia RTX A2000 driver from here: https://www.nvidia.com/content/DriverDownloads/confirmation.php?url=/Windows/Quadro_Certified/531.41... ("Agree & Download").  Do NOT run this executable file yet.

Power down your HP EliteDesk G4 SFF and unplug from power.  Push the power button for a couple of seconds in order to discharge any residual power.

Install your RTX A2000.

Restart your desktop and run/install the Nvidia driver you downloaded a minute ago ("531.41-quadro-rtx-desktop . . .").

Let's see if this will resolve your problem.

Kind Regards,

Thank you.

The system had a clean install of Windows 10 so I don't think it came preloaded with any graphical drivers. Though I don't think a graphical driver is the issue since the issue happens before I even boot into the OS.

I returned this Elitedesk 800 G4 SFF, because when it arrived it was covered in some sort of black dust. I cleaned it out, but I think that the PCI-E slot was damaged or unable to be cleaned because of it. I currently have another one on order for my project and it should be here around next week so I'll update the post when it comes around and if I have any trouble.

Sidenote: The graphics card could not be detected by Nvidia drivers when I tried to install them. The card doesn't show up in device manager and doesn't function while at the BIOS either.  I did power cycle like you described. I also tried disabling TPM and all security features in the BIOS and removed the M.2 drive. At that point I just considered the PCI-E slot unusable.

@CAS97,

You're welcome.

Not knowing what graphics driver(s) your drive might or might not have, running the DDU utility was just a precautionary step to wipe the proverbial slate.  You should use the RTX A2000 driver link I provided, though -and perform a 'clean install' (one of the driver installation options).

So the new Elitedesk G4 arrived. It was pretty clean on the inside and it booted up just fine.

I have a fresh install of Windows and I ran the program you recommended and cleared out all drivers.

I installed the graphics card, but it still does not display video upon boot and does not show up in device manager for Windows, and the NVIDIA drivers tells me that there isn't a NVIDIA device detected.

I have multiple adapters now One mini DisplayPort to HDMI, one mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort, and mini DisplayPort to DVI. And I know these adapters work because I tested them in my gaming PC.

When I get home from work I have a PCI-E x2 Wi-Fi card I can test the PCI-E x16 expansion slot with.

@CAS97,

Just a thought, but have you tried to disable secure boot in BIOS?

I have turned off secure boot in the BIOS. I have tried with legacy devices enabled and disabled. The Wi-Fi card works in all PCI-E expansion slots. The graphics card still fails to register at all. Driver failed to find the hardware.Driver failed to find the hardware.This shows up in Device ManagerThis shows up in Device ManagerNo drivers installed, just Microsoft Default.No drivers installed, just Microsoft Default.

@CAS97,

Of course, you got the latest version of Windows.  Do you mind trying to install your RTX A2000 using this Nvidia driver version: https://www.nvidia.com/content/DriverDownloads/confirmation.php?url=/Windows/Quadro_Certified/462.59....

It is the most up to date version of Windows 10, and these drivers fail as well to install. The only thing interesting I did this time is I had the graphics card hooked up to HDMI and got Teamviewer connected while it was like that. It took a few tries, but in device manager there are fewer PCI devices showing up because of this method. Screenshot 2023-04-11 062134.png

@CAS97,

This is frustrating, the RTX A2000 should work just like it does, say on this HP EliteDesk G4 SFF rig: HP EliteDesk 800 G4 SFF Performance Results - UserBenchmark.

If you have any other graphics card to your disposal, see if that one installs in your PCIe x16 slot.
