Hi  @Mrmatt1

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand you would like to find out which version of HP Fan Control Service is installed on your HP Desktop . I'll be glad to assist you.

To help us better understand your setup, could you kindly confirm the below detail:

  • Are you looking to verify the version before updating software or troubleshooting another issue?

In the meantime, you can check the installed HP Fan Control Service version using these steps:

Method 1: Services Console

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type services.msc and press Enter.
  3. Locate HP Fan Control Service.
  4. Right-click the service and select Properties.
  5. Note the Path to Executable location.

Method 2: Apps & Features

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Look for HP Fan Control, HP System Event Utility, or related HP thermal management software.
  3. Select the application and check for version information if available.

Additionally, kindly ensure your desktop BIOS and HP system drivers are up to date, as HP Fan Control functionality is closely integrated with the system firmware and thermal management settings.

I hope this helps.

Right:

Method 1:  could not even find HP Fan Control Service in services.msc

Method 2:  went to Installed Apps.  It's not even listed there.  The following are listed however:

HP

HP Audio Centre

HP Audio Switch

HP Connection Optimiser

HP Documentation

HP Enabling Services

HP JumpStarts

HP One Agent

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows

HP PC Privacy Settings
HP Print Support Application

HP PSDr NTService Component

HP Smart

HP Support Assistant

That as far as I can tell, is all there is.

Hi @Mrmatt1

Thank you for checking those steps and sharing the results.

Based on what you've found, HP Fan Control Service is most likely not installed on your PC as a separate Windows service or application.

Kindly note, On many HP Desktop PCs, fan control is managed directly through the BIOS/UEFI firmware and HP thermal management components, rather than through a separate Windows service that users can view or update independently.

It is listed on the HP Support Page, that is where I got the driver from.  Therefore presumably, I must need it.

https://support.hp.com/gb-en/drivers/hp-desktop-pc-m01-f1000i/model/37719669?serialnumber=4CE0520C4X...

However, I don't seem able to install it, and it is not listed in Installed Apps.

Also, when I look in View Reliability History / Reliability Monitor, I get the following for that:

Hi @Mrmatt1,

Thank you for providing the additional details. The Reliability Monitor entry gives us the key clue here.

The HP Fan Control App is actually installed on your PC, but it is crashing when it starts. That is why you do not see a working service in services.msc and why it may not appear as a normal application in Installed Apps.

The crash report shows:

  • Application: FanControlApp.exe
  • Version: 1.0.0.2
  • Location: C:\Program Files\FanControlApp\FanControlApp.exe
  • Error: APPCRASH (Exception Code: c0000005)

This indicates that Windows can see the application, but it is failing to run properly.

Try the below steps and confirm :

  1. Uninstall the existing HP Fan Control package
    • Open Control Panel > Programs and Features.
    • Look for HP Fan Control App or any related thermal/fan control component.
    • If found, uninstall it and restart the PC.

Since HP's support website specifically lists the HP Fan Control package for your model, Could you kindly confirm whether the installer completes successfully, or does it show an error during installation?

Although I can't see the HP Fan Control App.  Or anything other related.

By the way, when I do try and run the installer (sp172374), it does seem to have problems installing.

Hi @Mrmatt1,

Thank you for sharing the details and screenshots.

Based on the information provided, The HP Fan Control App is not installing correctly on your HP Desktop M01-F1000i, even though the driver package (sp172374) is listed on the HP Support page for your model. The Reliability Monitor confirms that FanControlApp.exe is crashing immediately after launch (APPCRASH - Exception Code c0000005), which typically indicates a corrupted installation, an incomplete installation, or a software compatibility issue.

Kindly try the below steps and confirm :
Remove the existing Fan Control files

  • Open File Explorer.
  • Navigate to:
  • C:\Program Files\
  • If you see a folder named FanControlApp, delete it.
  • Restart the PC.

Download a fresh copy of the driver
  • Re-download sp172374 directly from the HP Support page for your desktop.
  • Save it locally, preferably on the Desktop.

    Run the installer as Administrator
  • Right-click the downloaded installer.
  • Select Run as administrator.
  • Complete the installation and restart the PC.

If the installation still fails

  • Extract the installer instead of running it:
    • Launch the installer and note the extraction location (usually C:\SWSetup\SP172374).
  • Check whether any installation log files are created and if any error messages appear during setup.

If your desktop's fan is operating normally and you are not experiencing overheating, excessive fan noise, or thermal warnings, the HP Fan Control software may not be essential for normal operation because fan management is primarily handled by the system BIOS.

Hello again.  Apologies for the delay in returning.

I have had a look and cannot see any Program Folders of that name.

I could however find the following (after doing a search):

I will however download another copy of that sp172374 package.

I note that there was a previous version (sp172007).
