I am having the same exact problem.
Recently my HP Pavilion a1357c desktop was upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7, and now my Ethernet Controller is uninstalled. I've been looking everywhere to try and find the drivers to install, and of course the easiest way, and the way my computer suggests, is Windows update, but I need an internet connection to use that. Such a catch 22.
I tried the vendor/device search (no results), and I downloaded the Astra32.
My vendor is: 10ECh, Realtek Semiconductor
and my Device is: 8168h, RTL8168/8111 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC
Not sure if you need it, but I'll provide it just in case. The Subsys Vendor is 1458h, Giga-Byte Technology
Subsystem ID (E000h(, GA-EP45-DS5 Motherboard
hardware ID: PCI\\VEN_10EC&DEV_8168&SUBSYS_E0001458&REV_06
compatiable ID: PCI\\VEN_10EC&DEV_8168&REV_06
Please help!
thanks

Hi, Ravissimo:
The product specs show that your notebook shipped with Vista Home Premium 64 bit.
Below is the link to the vista 64 bit driver for your ethernet controller.

Thanks so very much~this did help. Now after connecting the cable I was able to load a few upgrades from the HP site, but I am still receiving the following errors: Standard VGA Graphics adapter & Under other devices- Ethernet controller, and two unknown devices. Like i said, I logged on HP and performed an automactice scan so that I could receive the updates from them, but these errors still exist. Lastly, the wi-fi light is on, but I am not picking up a signal-Oh no!. Any help you can provide is most appreciated. Thanks

You're very welcome.
We can get the rest...
Please click on each device needing drivers in the device manager one at a time.
Then click on the Details tab.
In the Properties drop down list, select the second item (Hardware ID's).
Post the top string of characters you see in the window for each device.
Those will ID the type and model of the devices, and I can send you the links to the drivers you need.

I was able to solve the AVG issue. The two links are: ACPI\ENE0100 *ENE0100 & ACPI\HPQ0004 *HPQ0004
For the Ethernet Controller, it only reads, "ethernet controller". I even tried the "reinstall" and "update driver" button, both to no avail. Also, any thoughts why the wi-fi has not kicked in? Thanks.

The ethenet controller is probably the wireless card, and it needs drivers.
Try these drivers...
You may need the wireless assistant software installed for your wireless card to work.
How come when you click on the ethernet controller and click on the hardware ID drop down, it doesn't give the string of characters? I've never heard of that happening before.
