Thanks!
I'll give it a try, keep your (and mine...) fingers crossed...
edit:
It went well, I think...
Hopefully it stays that way after restarting my notebook!
edit2:
Seems that everything works just fine! Happy...
Lesson: Don't fix it if it ain't broken...:smileytongue:

Hi again.
My tweet conversation at @hpsupport was responded to with a request for model number and operating system and then I received a direct link to the BIOS update to download. I did and ran it and now the bios is updated. I then deleted the HP assistant message.
So solved for me- suggest you all do the same?

I did this a couple of days ago after DavidPK (in another thread) identified the correct Bios for my system. The installation was a success.
While I am grateful for the assistance, the situation is rather unsatisfactory in that 1) HP Assistant is failing to do the installation, 2) when I went to the HP site, it was unable to identify my computer and hence unable to tell me which of three possible Bios updates I should installl.
HP needs to fix this.

Hi all,
having same issue here
Brand new HP laptop 15.6" core i5, Nvidia 940M, 4GBytes, 1Tbyte HDD star wars edition, first power-up 3 days ago.
Product Number : P4J20EA#ABF
Got several Windows 10 / HP support assistant updates so far, now stuck in BIOS update which keeps in 'installation' phase endlessly.
From logs, I see nothing seem to happen :

It's been like this for almost 1 hour
Process SP74479 (32bits) is still running in memory, with no CPU activity.
No way to see if it's printing anything on hidden console (likely).
HP support assistant keeps waiting for it to complete ...
What's wrong with your BIOS updates, HP ?
I likely can live without it, but you push us to instal it through messages in your support software, so I assume it should work ....
I see in the log it thinks this PC is running windows 8. Not true. It's Windows 10, out of the box.
Current Bios is :
<Win32_BIOS>
<Index>0</Index>
<Manufacturer>Insyde</Manufacturer>
<ReleaseDate>20150922******.******+***</ReleaseDate>
<SMBIOSMajorVersion>2</SMBIOSMajorVersion>
<SMBIOSMinorVersion>8</SMBIOSMinorVersion>
<SMBIOSBIOSVersion>F.54</SMBIOSBIOSVersion>
</Win32_BIOS>
SP74479 brings :
F.77 Rev.A 29.0 MB 3 avr. 2016

Hi,
I manually downloaded the SP74479.exe from HP site and ran as administrator, instead.
It went through the whole process sucessfully, and after a couple of reboots (flash bios, reboot, flash boot zone, reboot), BIOS is now updated.
<Win32_BIOS>
<Index>0</Index>
<Manufacturer>Insyde</Manufacturer>
<ReleaseDate>20151218******.******+***</ReleaseDate>
<SMBIOSMajorVersion>2</SMBIOSMajorVersion>
<SMBIOSMinorVersion>8</SMBIOSMinorVersion>
<SMBIOSBIOSVersion>F.77</SMBIOSBIOSVersion>
</Win32_BIOS>
So, issue resides in the way HP support assistant is trying to run the update ? Pure SW issue from HP, there 😞
Hope this may help others.
Better to go to HP support website with ProductNumber and get appropriate BIOS from there apparently ....
Rgds

Hi,
Don't know if this will be any help, but I recently got a HP OMEN Notebook - 15-5211na (ENERGY STAR), and had the same problem with the bios update hanging using the support assistant, I did manage to update it by:
1) Going on to the HP website support section, went into find my my product and clicked on Identify Now. (I was being lazy and could't be bothered to find the box my laptop came in)
2)Went to Software and Drivers and downloaded the Bios Update.
(HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processors) Version:F.34 Rev.A Apr 11, 2016)
The file downloaded may be different to the one I have. Right click on the download button and use Save Target As, then you'll know which file to open and where it is.
3)Turned off wifi and disabled antivirus
4)Opened task manger (CTRL+ALT+DELETE) and stopped all HP programs running in the background and InsydeFlash.exe*. This is so you will be able to select the option to update now in the next step.
*The software used to flash your Bios and is still running even if you cancel the update.
4) Ran the update, accepted T&C's, kept clicking next until I was given the update options and selected the top option to update system.
5) Restarted laptop
Hope this helps and works for others with this problem. Feel free to copy or link this if it does 🙂
