just an update on my Windows 7 install.  Re-installing F.26 fixed the fan issues, WASD not lighting up properly, and media keys not functioning......odd.  Whatever 😛

I spoke with an italian Hp technician.
After a try with PCI express settings (Inactive) with no success, he told me he read this thread and he forwarded every details about the bug to Hp engineers.

He will contact me again soon.

I THINK I FOUND A POSSIBLE FIX TO ERROR 129!

I think my original theory was correct.  There's something within the HP recovery partition that, when deleted, causes Error 129.  It has to be firmware for the SanDisk SSD specifically for Windows 8.1 and higher, because I didn't have the issue at all under Windows 7 (which btw, works wonderfully minus game stuttering and fan control issues).  Windows 7 also uses a different AHCI driver than Windows 8+.

IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING ERROR 129 AND CONSTANT FREEZES, DO A SYSTEM RESTORE WITH THE OFFICIAL HP RECOVERY!  IF YOU DELETED IT (you shouldn't have), EITHER USE THE BACK-UP YOU (should have) CREATED, OR ORDER THE RECOVERY MEDIA FROM HP.  It's under HP Omen 5000 CTO, and was US$48.

I did a complete system restore from the recovery media I ordered from HP, and as of yet haven't seen Error 129.  I actually never saw this error until I did a clean install back to Windows 8.1 due to my DJ equipment not supporting Windows 10.  If you swap out your SSD for a bigger one, make sure you buy a well-supported SSD that'll come with the necessary firmware for any/all fixes, or else you may see Error 129 again.

If anything changes or if that nasty error shows its ugly head again, I'll be sure to come back and post about it.  But so far so good 🙂  Let's hope it stays that way.

Have you Installed all updates? I read that the storahci is identified in logs after a specific update. I had not removed the hp backup but Hp assistance had changed ssd and restored the system, twice.

I don't want to spend money for a new ssd. It's not a solution. Restore to win7 is not a solution as well, as the hp tech explained me.

No, I have not installed updates.  If there's a specific update then it would be best to go back & see which causes it, remove it, restart and hide the update.

However, I will mention that when I did a clean install, it would still happen on a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 with no updates.  If you're still getting the error, do a complete restore.  If that doesn't work, there could be something wrong with your laptop/SSD, specifically the firmware (which is what I think is the issue in the first place).  I agree, those aren't solutions, but if someone is willing to try them, they do work.

The question ist, what excatly is in the Recovery Partition that fixes the error?

The Recovery Partition is quite big and does really take it's space on the 256GB SSD.

The next Question is what if we buy another SSD? Samsung/Transcend whatever - are they supported or do we need to expect 129 & 153?

And finally - what if we want to use Windows 10? Recovery to the Windows 8.1 Image and then Upgrade to Windows 10? So no clean install possible?

Just to note, I still haven't had Error 129 even though I've been out drinking for five hours.  I think what's in the HP partition is a firmware that's only mean for SanDisk SSD's since I haven't heard anything from those with the 512GB Samsung m.2 variant.

Did you use HP Recovery Manager or the Startup recovery (F11 or F12..can't remember)?

Guys, GUYS! Chill...

System restore DOES NOT FIX the issue. It only fixes it temporarily but I GUARANTEE that the issue comes back sooner or later (in my case it was 3-4 weeks).

I suggest you read this thread from the begining, because I have already posted this fact on like page 2 or something. It doesn't matter if you do a refresh or a complete restore (tried both), both lead to a temporary fix of the issue, but in both cases it comes back eventually.

So DO NOT WASTE MORE MONEY on ordering a system restore disc from HP, there is no point!

Sorry guys, HP don't care none. Anyways, I even got a PM from some HP guy asking me for details and stuff, he said he'd refer me to some team working on the issue... so I replied and guess what :)? It's been almost 2 weeks now and no reply.

Yep, thanks HP, big thumbs up (our as*es).

Anyway... I suggest you just try to return this piece of garbage of a notebook and get yourself another one, that is the only REAL FIX of the issue.

As I said before, I never had the issue previously.  I only had it when I decided to do a clean install.  If you had the issue without ever wiping your SSD clean, you might want to see if you can send it in for a warranty repair.
