Having exactly the same problem, I have tried ALL the suggestions and workarounds with no success.

I have got the App and I can see my printer and it would appear that my ink status has been updated....BUT the printer is still showing that I am not connected to Instant Ink and I am unable to print.

Today I went up the road to a friends house with an HP printer and I managed to print 20 pages until their printer got the same error 'connect printer to update Instant Ink status'.

This is an HP problem.

I have just spent the past 30+ minutes chatting to an HP Agent who was very helpful BUT.......

At the end of various procedures, changes to my printer, including running all the so called "work arounds" like changing the Web Services settings and factory resets it has been decided that the changes that HP have made will prevent my old but perfectly functioning HP ENVY 4524 from connecting to the HP Instant Ink servicewhich I have been using successfully for the past 4 years.

This really is unacceptable.  In addition Im told that my existing ink cartridges will no longer work if I dont have a subscription.  I complained to the Agent who was most apologetic but was unable to suggest any further help other than to replace the printer.

I feel the need to report these facts to a higher HP authority but not sure how or to whom I should address this.

Adding another unhappy user -- HP OfficeJet 3830 with an active Instant Ink subscription; the printer console keeps saying it needs to Connect, and then "Updating the Printer" ... but then no printing! I've followed https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printers-Knowledge-Base/Troubleshooting-quot-Cannot-Connect-to-Web-Ser... to no avail. It really seems like there's an issue with one of the HP servers here.

@jeffschaller and others --

I will send a request for another look -- I have been assured "all should be well" now with the servers that provide the service.

If you have not done so,

Consider

Restart computer and printer, and if you can stand it, your router.

-- Dragon Note --

The addition of the manual / static IP address setup as suggested in the TKB will help ensure the printer can find its way back on your network.  Regardless of all else, do leave that upgrade in place to increase network stability.  Ask if you need / want to see an example of the manual / static IPv4 settings using EWS.

If you have not done so,

Consider

Recheck that the network profile is set to Private and Network Discovery Settings are still enabled.

Thank you for your quick reply, @Dragon-Fur!

I retested just now, including a restart of the printer and router, and am getting the same results. The printer's IP is reserved via DHCP and also hard-coded on the printer; the DNS servers are hard-coded (tried 1.1.1.1 but am now using Google's 8.8.8.8). The printer appears to be online to the HP Smart app on the laptop, but every attempt at the printer console to Connect and Update still fails.

I'll be curious to hear if there's any further development; thank you!

The bottom line for me has been cancellation of the HP Instant Ink contract and the purchase of a replacement printer. (definitely NOT an HP one)  BEWARE...if you do that, any ink cartridges that HP Instant Ink have sent to you you will no longer work.

My printer is 4 years old and lightly used. It was working fine until some firmware/software changes at HP.  I contacted support and after much resetting of the printer including factory reset etc the Agent said that my printer was no longer supported.  I'm in the process of claiming a refund for the unusable (disconnected) Ink Cartridges which, in my opinion, I have already paid for.

Following up a couple hours later -- the printer has finally printed! It made it through the "Connect" menu options finally, so now I'm going to try and unwind all the changes I made on the way to this point. Very frustrating to have spent most of a day on this -- we came close to recreating that scene from Office Space and buying a non-HP printer!

Thank you to @Dragon-Fur for their follow-ups and assistance!
