May I have the exact model name of the product? Refer to this document for steps to find the product details. Do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc.
Is the printer enrolled in HP Instant Ink Program?

I got the ink cartridges and thanks for you help in this matter. We appreciate the attention. But, the printer won't recognize the new cartridge either. Does that mean the printer is defective? It's two years out of warranty. My wife loved this printer, but is very frustrated with the ink issues. Any ideas??

Yes, the printer might be defective.
Since the device is out of warranty, and we've concluded that this is a hardware malfunction, I may have a few pointers/suggestions to help you out, however, since these suggestions are limited to you and your printer alone, I'd like to send out a private message with those details.

I have an HP envy photo 6255 and keeping getting a black ink cartridge error saying to re-install which I have done several times. I have in-plugged the printer to reboot several times, cleaned the cartridges, checked for software and firmware updates and have also ordered new black cartridges to no avail....keep getting the same error message
