I had no idea that for PDF's and some other things (grey scale e.g.) the color cartridge is used to print black. After playing with it to no avail I suddenly got the message that the color cartridge was empty.

 

I replaced the color cartridge and it now prints fine. I am surprised that this did not pop up when I searched this forum?
