Hi everyone I was just simply trying to print PDF from my wireless printer but it never printed tried numerous times I went on the HP app and deleted the print cue so as not to hold things up I noticed the information icon was on so I pressed it and it printed off a printer report which says printer paused a problem has occurred and you will be unable to print till its fixed!!! it also said the signal strength was excellent. I then went on to the HP app to see what was happening and it says there was a cartridge and account issue so checked my account that was fine so went and did the diagnostic test test on HP and that turned up no issues found!! I've also turned it off and on again the same for my computer just in case.

For general help for new router or printer please refer to this article in our printer database.

Please provide the exact model name of the printer for better assistance as I may be able to find videos to show how to connect or fix the problem. A printer can be a PRO or a PLUS or have the letter 'e' after the number and that can make a big difference. Some printers with the same number ID could be a LaserJet, Deskjet, or Officejet.

If your printer model ends in the letter 'e' then click the spoiler for special needs.

Spoiler
HP+ printers are designated by a lowercase "e" at the end of their model number (e.g., 8135e rather than 8135). These models are enabled for HP's smart printing ecosystem, which requires a permanent internet connection, an HP account, and the exclusive use of Original HP ink for the lifetime of the printer.

Do you have an instant ink subscription or have you signed up for HP+ internet features?

I do have instant ink set up with HP but nothing else.

There is a recent firmware release, 2612 dated April 2026 make sure you have that version.

Your printer needs to be online.  if the network report shows an ip address of 192.168.y.z it is likely online.,

If the ip address starts with 169.x.y.z it is not online.  Your PC may be  connected to it over Wi-Fi direct just fine, but it will not print.

Possibly there is a problem with your instant ink account. I am just guessing

This is all I know about Instant Ink and other subscriptions.

I do not have an instant ink printer. My understanding is that if you run out of ink, or you cancel your subscription, you can use genuine Hewlett Packard cartridges either original or refilled. They must have an HP chip in the cartridge. The below type is unlikely to work.
BeemerBiker_0-1738160500480.png
Note that this is a peer to peer forum and I am just the messenger of this bad news: Instant ink cartridges can only be used when the ink subscription is active.   HP is not the only company that wants their own ink used. The last time I checked, Epson, Canon and Brother all do the same.

I am making a second post in case you need to setup the network connection again.

The below is all know about your Deskjet: 4220.  Hope I am not oversharing!

Watch the reset video or perform the steps. After resetting, you generally have 2 hours to complete the setup. Decide if you want to connect the printer to the router or to print directly to the printer and bypass the router.

Many HP and other OEM printers have problems with the router when the router has two or more bands and all have the same name (SSID). Log into the modem and rename one of the bands. Alternately, contact your ISP and have them rename a band, or simply use Wi-Fi direct.
NOTE: If you signed up for instant ink, internet services, or your printer model ends in the letter 'e' then click the spoiler for special needs.

Spoiler

Disconnecting the USB cable may still leave the printer in the wired or Wi-Fi mode. Connecting an ethernet cable may still leave the printer in Wi-Fi mode. The Wi-Fi reset is used to put Wi-Fi printers into setup mode. Some resets are simple and others require a video to understand. Factory resets cannot be revealed in this forum. To do a factory reset of your printer, you must contact HP.

Wi-Fi reset instructions and videos (if any) are shown below. Generally you have 2 hours to connect your printer after performing the Wi-Fi reset. Note that a reset video may show a slightly different model than yours. Do not call any phone numbers revealed in any video or site.

Spoiler

Ideally, your Wi-Fi printer should connect to the modem or router. If your network has multiple boosters / repeaters, it is possible the printer may connect randomly to any of the units. The router needs to provide the same IP address on every connection. This rarely happens with random connects. An alternate Wi-Fi connection is Wi-Fi direct. Your laptop or smartphone prints directly to the printer and does not go through the router. For web services the printer must be online through the router, but you can still print using Wi-Fi direct. Do not call any phone number revealed in any video or site.

This video shows how to connect to the router: 4252
Wi-Fi Direct can be used to avoid configuring the router. Watch this: 4252
Wi-Fi Direct is explained on page 11 of the User Manual, this Wi-Fi setup avoids configuring the router.
A simple connection to the router can be done by using the WPS pushbutton method. This is explained on page 11 in this User Manual.
