I tried to print some photos on this printer and noted the options have changed. There is no way I can now choose the photo paper size (10x15cm / 4x6in). It used to be there and is now gone. The customized paper size setting thread doesn't work as my menus are simply missing the "custom" button. I run Windows 10 version 1803.

With this issue, I cannot use the printer anymore to print photos - no idea what happened to the paper size menu as it now has a very limited number of items to choose from (cca 10). I tried to reinstall the printer but it does not achieve anything.

Many thank for your help / ideas how to fix this.

Normally, print options, including those of Media type (kind of paper), Source (Tray), Duplex (two sided), and Paper Size (size of the sheet of paper), are selected within the application (program) used to submit the job to the printer.

It is important to know which program is being used to configure and set up the print job.

Depending on what has happened, Consider / Try:

  • Reinstall the Full Solution  Software for the printer
  • Re-create your Custom Paper Sizes form(s) (See below)
  • Perhaps update the printer Firmware
  • Re-Check the configuration on whatever programs you are using to submit the job to the printer

General Discussion

In the case of printing photos, for example, the Paper Size is "linked" to the selection of Media (kind of paper).

This is true for the other options, as well.

That means that the Media (kind of paper) must be selected in an allowed combination with the other options to accomplish the complete setup necessary to print a photo (on photo paper), from the correct source (tray), always one-sided (duplex is incompatible with photo paper), and the allowed size.

Example:

Media = HP Photo Paper (or other high quality photo paper)

Source = Tray 1  OR  Photo Tray (for those printers supporting this feature)

Duplex = OFF (not compatible with photo paper)

Paper Size = 4x6 inches (or equivalent in mm)

If any one of the options is misconfigured (or not selected), the result might be missing (or incorrect) settings in another option.

Custom shortcuts (called Presets in Mac OS), are used to store configurations for a particluar type of print job.

Custom shortcuts are normally available as part of the print job setup.  Depending on the software (program) used to view and set up the job for the printer, the shortcuts might be shown under "Properties", "Printing Properties", "Printer Settings", "Preferences", or a similar name.

For example,

Are you printing using HP Photo Creations ?

If yes, the Shortcuts (both standard and any custom templates) are available under Printer Settings.

Example

Photo_Creations_Multi-Up_1Photo_Creations_Multi-Up_1

Interestingly, the documentation on this printer appears incomplete.  For example, the Specifications sheet is missing (I did find the Datasheet), and the "how to" document section does not include "How to Print Photos" for Windows.  In general, though, the instructions document is relevant for most printers -- the link is included below.

Video help included for printing with Windows 10 “Photos” software.

HP Printers - How to Print Photos (Windows)

From the printer "how to" section:

Print Driver Settings Guide (Windows)

Although the document is not part of this printer's "how to" list, the following is relevant for those printers that support Custom Sizes.  (The Datasheet indicates custom sizes are supported, though it is vague about whether this is for Mac AND Windows both.)

HP document  HP Printers - Creating Custom Paper Sizes

Custom Size Form Setup for Windows

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers >

Left-Click on your Printer one time to highlight >

Left-Click Print Server Properties (along the top ribbon)

Once created the custom size form can be incorporated into a custom shortcut.

Custom_Form_Index_Card_9x12Custom_Form_Index_Card_9x12

Thanks. Unfortunately having tried various bits here, it just doesn't work.

I change the paper type to HP Advanced Photo paper but I don't get the 10x15 / 4x6 print option in the paper size. I can still only select A4, A5 and a few other options. When I try to print, error message comes up that the paper inserted doesn't match the expected (of course, given that I am still trying to print with A4 whilst having photo paper in there).

For some reason, I just cannot do anything right to be able to select the paper size matching my photo paper.

Well, I don't know.  Rats.

In so much that I am aware, for those printers that support a photo tray in addition to the main tray (Tray 1), one can keep paper in both regions (photo paper in the Photo tray and other sized paper in Tray 1).

For those printers that do not support the photo tray in addition to other tray(s) installed on the printer, then the situation is similar only in that when there are two main trays, Tray 1 can be loaded with the photo paper and Tray 2 might be loaded with "plain paper".

I have seen where the Source (tray to be used for the current job) must be set to the exact tray needed for the job, that is, select Tray 1 or Photo Tray (or other tray) as opposed to leaving the Source as "Automatic" or similar wording.

If you have already reinstalled the Full Solution software and completed the other other Troublshooting steps, then it is more the mystery.

If I have any flashes of brilliance on the subject, I will post back.
