Hi @ccc96, and welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I see from your description that you are getting an error (0xffffffce) when trying to add your printer and as a result, you cannot add the device to your Mac. I would be happy to help you with this.

I checked the Apple Support Community, and it looks like the issue is not limited to HP, instead it might be the printing system itself. Please complete the following steps and let me know the outcome:

Reset Printing System

  1. Click the Apple icon, and then click System Preferences.
  2. In the Hardware section, click Print & Fax/Scan. The Print & Fax/Scan dialog box opens.
  3. Right-click (or  Ctrl  +click) in the left panel, and then click Reset printing system…
  4. Click OK to confirm the reset.
  5. Type the correct Name and Password.
  6. Click OK to reset the printing system. The Print & Fax dialog box shows no printer selected

Note: This will remove all printers in the print and Fax/Scan, any printer removed can be re-added later by clicking the plus (+) symbol.

Repair Disk Permissions

  • Click on your desktop so that next to the Apple icon it says Finder, then click on Go (you will see this next to Finder after File, Edit and View).
  • Under Go, click on Applications.
  • In Applications select Utilities.
  • In the Utilities folder you will see Disk Utility, double-click this icon to open the Disk Utilities.
  • Click on your Hard drive, then click on First Aid. Click Okay to allow it to run.

Once the repair is complete, restart the computer and add the printer back.

When you add the printer, please ensure you are using the HP driver.

  1. Select Add other Printer or Scanner
  2. Select the printer you are adding and next to 'Use' select the printer driver. As you can see from the image below, the AirPrint driver will be auto selected by default. You will need to choose your printer driver instead. Using the HP driver will help isolate the issue if the issue persists.

If this resolves the issue, please click the Accept as Solution button below so others can see what worked for you. If however the issue persists, please let me know and I will help research other potential solutions.

Thanks, I look forward to hearing back from you.

did not work...I called HP again today told me I needed to contact router provider (Comcast) for access Port Forwarding instruction:

-UDP port 5353 under Advanced > Port Forwarding
Use Common Services - Other, Other Service - enter Bonjour, Service Type - select UDP, Server IP Address - enter the printer address, Starting/Ending Port - enter 5353, select Save and logout. You will need to hard-boot the router
try to setup.

-I did make these updates to the router, but still can not connect wireless printer.

Thanks for letting me know. Let's check if the printer has wireless direct. On the front panel of the printer, please look in the network settings for Wireless Direct, and turn it on if it is available. Please pardon my uncertainty, LaserJets are not my area of expertise, I am by far more familiar with the Inkjet models; in any case, if you have the option to enable Wireless Direct, we can then put the Mac on the network the printer is broadcasting. This is not my proposed solution, merely a diagnostic test to determine if the issue is indeed related to the router (network).

If you can add the Mac to the printer's network, try adding the printer to the Mac and printing. If this works, the issue is for sure the network, if not we will circle back and work towards isolating the root cause in order to come to a solution.

Keep me posted.

I know this thread is over a year old, but for those that stumble across it looking for answers, like I did.... I had the same exact issue.

For me, i discovered that my router provided 3 different portals to access the internet (i.e. Netgear94, Netgear94-5G, netgear94-Guest).  Since my printer was connected to Netgear94 and my laptop was connected to Netgear94-5G, I was getting this error.  Once they were both on the same portal, problem solved.

Very strange because I don't have this issue with my PC and printer being on different portals.  First printer pairing issue I've ever had on a mac.

I followed your instructions after 2 weeks not being able to sort the printer connection and I'm absolutely relieved to have sorted it with your help - thank you!
