My HP laserjet 1536dnf MFP says rthere is a jam in the cartridge area. I've taken out the cartridge multiple times, and there is no jam there. I've unplugged it, turned it over and shaken it, and that didn't work. The warranty is over, and it has a new cartridge in it, so I'd hate to lose it.
Any suggestions?
Frustrated, harborview

Hi harborview,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I understand you are getting a jam error but are not able to find anything.
I will be happy to help you.
Remove the toner and use a flashlight to check inside for any tiny piece of paper which could be blocking the paper sensor. There might be a piece inside the printer that you aren't able to get to which might be causing the paper jam error.
If you still can't find anything I would disconnect any USB or Ethernet cables from the printer.
I would do a power reset to see if that will resolve the issue. With the printer still turned on, disconnect the power cable from the back of the printer. Then disconnect the power cable from the wall outlet.
Wait 10 seconds and reconnect the power cable back to the wall outlet first, then the back of the printer and power it on again.
Make sure the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet. (don't use a power hub or a surge protector)
If the display is in a ready state, try and print a hardware self test.
Printing a Configuration Report. Use Method one: Print a Configuration Report from the printer control panel.
Clear out any jobs in the print queue from the computer. There might be one in there with the paper jam error causing this issue.
'Printer is offline' Message Displays on the Computer and the HP Printer Will Not Print.
Go to Solution six: Manually clear the print queue and Solution seven: Restart the Print Spooler device.
Now connect the USB or Ethernet cable back and try printing from the computer if the error message is gone from the printer's display and it printed the self test.
Please let me know the results if you are still having issues.

Have a great weekend!

Question,
We have a HP 1536dnf MFP and its giving the error "Install black cartrige or clear jam open&close door". There is no paper jam, we have done ALL the troubleshoot items, multiple times. We have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer, 4 times. We have put it on another computer, uninstalled and reinstalled, 4 times. We followed your suggestion above, multiple times. STILL not working. It will NOT let us print a clearning page, it will not print anything. It will scan, but it will not print. It denies any faxes that come in b/c it will not print. Is there another override? We have done the 'reset" mentioned above, we have done "restore defaults". Is there anything else that can be done? it will NOT print and we have put in 2, yes 2, brand new HP black cartriges. Nothing works...please help...

Hi TLFirm,
Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are getting the error "Install black cartrige or clear jam open & close door".
I will be happy to help you.
Since you have already tried two toners and can't find any paper jams it might be a hardware issue with the printer itself.
Please check your private messages.

Dear G,
Is there a way to FORCE the printer to feed a piece of paper through? not through the document feeder - It does that fine with scanning, but is there a way to force it through the printer? b/c nothing else is working and HP tech support just says my only option is to buy a new printer

Hi TLFirm,
Unfortunately there is no way to force a paper through the printer other then the self tests.
If the printer is in a error state or any flashing lights, most likely it won't print the hardware or self test, but you can try.
Try and print a hardware self test.
Printing a Configuration Report.
Select Method one.
Try running a cleaning page through the printer.
Troubleshooting Print Quality Issues.
Go to Solution four: Print a Cleaning Page.
The only other thing left to do, would be a firmware update on the printer if that hasn't been done yet.
HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf Multifunction Printer Drivers.
Thank You.

I have the same problem. There was initially a jam, but it was easily cleared. I keep getting "Install black cartridge or clear jam Open/close door." I have tried all of the suggestions here to no avail, including putting in a new cartridge. The error message will not go away and the printer will not print a test page or anything else.

Hi @frustratedatty,
I understand that you are getting the error "Install black cartridge or clear jam Open/close door", after clearing a paper jam. You have tried all the troubleshooting documentation with the same error message. I can help you with this.
Remove all the paper from the paper tray, maybe one piece of paper is fed part way through, blocking the sensor.
I would do a hard reset to see if that will resolve the issue.
Leave the printer on and unplug the power cable from the printer and wall outlet for 60 seconds.
Then reconnect the power cable to the printer and wall outlet rather than a surge protector.
This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
Then load at least 15 or more sheets of paper in the tray, to see if the printer goes back to a ready mode.
If the issue persists, remove the toner and use a flashlight to check for any tiny pieces of paper that might be caught and blocking the toner sensor in that area.
Let me know the outcome.
Have a nice day!
Thank You.
Are you using Genuine HP Toner?

Hi @serta1 ,
I would like to be able to help you out, but I will need some more information so we can figure this out.
Are you getting a false paper jam or a install cartridge error message?
Did you try all the steps provided in the previous posts to try and resolve this issue?
Please let me know what you have tried already.
Are you using Genuine HP Toner?
Did you originally have a paper jam?
Thank You.
