trying to get my HP5L working with my win 10 desk top.It has previously worked on this computer with Win 10.Using paralell printer cable the computer sees the the printer and says everything is ok but the printer will not print, stays stuck with error light on.Installed Hp scan doctor but it says the printer is not connected. Installed HPSMART but that cant find printer.I`ve downloaded latest drivers and unzipped them burt cant get them to run/install.
Any help appreciated

Hi, Many thanks for your reply. Yes, I couldn`t remember as to whether or not the printer had to be connected to the computer to print a test page. I downloaded a copy of the manual yesterday and it confirmed that you should be able to print a test page when not connected to the computer, and it won`t ,so that eliminated any computer and software problems and that it had to be something on the printer.
Using the manual I stripped the printer housings off and checked the photosensors as advised and found that PS201 "exit sensor flag" had broken off and the return spring is missing .I suspect this has been damaged during a paper jam pull out
The manual actually states that if this sensor flag is not assembled correctly it will give the permanent error light. So I think you are spot on with your diagnososis.
Of course all of this still needs to be proven, but the problem now is,where do I get a flag and spring from ?
If any of you guys have any spares from an old printer I would greatly apprecaite it.
part no. FLAG RB1-7293-000CN & TENSION SPRING RB1-7294-000CN
It appears that this flag and spring were used on various HP printers and,I was surprised to find ,on some Canon models also.So there just maybe a chance that someone has one.
I`ve searched the web and found some advertised, but nearly all in America and the total cost including postage is prohibitive.
i`d love to keep this old machine in working order if I can.
I`m just musing over the possibilty of inserting a card into photo sensor just to see if the error light cancels ,I know I`ll have to close the housing and cartridge interlock also
I may start a new thread just to ask if anyone has the parts.
Anyway, once again , many thanks for help and I`ll report back if it`s sucessful

Hi,
The HP Laserjet 5L printer is not supported o Windows 10 and no driver exists:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03450061
If it may work before, although not officially supported and not tested by HP, you may try replacing a cable or adapter and test.

Thanks for your reply, I understand what you`re saying but the fact remains that it has been working well on Win 10 for some time and the computer recognises it and displays it as a working device. Also, I have a 4L which is working ok on the same computer so something has changed or the printer is faulty.Niether of the HP apps can communicate with it.
As a seperate issue do you why I can`t install the hp drivers which I`ve down loaded,I`ve unzipped them but I can`t see a method to run or install them.?
I`ll try another paralell cable
Many thanks again for the time and effort you have put in

- Fare clic sull'elenco a discesa Usa porta esistente e selezionare DOT4_001 , quindi fare clic su Avanti .
- In Stampanti , selezionare HP LaserJet 1020 , quindi fare clic su Avanti .
- Prova a stampare.

Many thanks to you all for all of your suggestions,
Firstly the printer is connected to the computer by its original parallel 25 pin inteface cable, not byUSB.
I have reinstalled the printer and the system sees the printer and installs the correct HP 5L drivers, which it recommends,The computer sets the printer as default and sends a test sheet to it, with no reponse from the printer I have sent documents to the printer and the system directs me to the HP5L and the documents are in the print que along withe test sheets.I`ve tried HP`s on line diagnostic tools (HP Scan Doctor,HP Smart and 123.HP.com) and they see the printer but are unable to communicate with it.
I`ve also tried the onboard printer trouble shooter and that sees the printer and reports that the printer and the onboard printer system are all functioning correctly.
I can only assume that there is a fault which has developed within the printer itself but I don`t understand why the computer is saying it`s ok and I dont undrstand why HP`s diagnostics can`t communicate with the printer?
Once again many thanks to all concerened and if anybody has any further sggestions I would be most greatful.
Regards Johnm
