Q2670A
Microsoft Windows Server 2012 and older

Trying to buy new original HP toner cartridges for the office printer, it suddenly seems difficult to find.

The toners are HP Q2670A (blacK) Q2681A (C), Q2682A (Y) and Q2683(M)

Modern rebranded numbers are HP 308, HP 311A (Cyan), HP 311A (Yellow) and HP 311A (Magenta)

The HP SureSupply page for our country returns no results, while the US store seems to have only two of the four colors.

However looking on the support page for the printer, there is no announcement of an end-of-sale for the toners.  (Printer is obviously out of warranty, but it's been so for years with no problem buying toner).

So are these toners discontinued or just temporarily out of stock?

Is there a quality 2nd source for the toners (we have had bad experiences with cheap toners)?

What printer model are you refering to here?

We can check the specs on the printer model to see if HP updated the supporing cartridges with new models.

It's a Color LaserJet 3700dtn with various extra options installed.  Out of warranty but very recently serviced.

Try the 311a series:

https://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-311a-magenta-original-laserjet-toner-cartridge

Otherwise HP doesnt have anything else listed directly on the toner cartridge purchase area of the store:

I already mentioned the 311A series in my initial question.

A possible HP alternative is the 309A (Q2671A/Q2672A/Q2673A) series of 4000 page toners for the Color LaserJet 3500, since the two printers use the same black cartridge (the 308A / Q2670A).  But I can't find the number for a 4000 page black toner for either model.

If those are not good (and there seems to be no 309A black toner), then the question reverts to the other ones:

  • Which 3rd party toner is good for the 3700dtn?
  • Where and when did HP announce that they would stop offering toners for the 3700dtn?

I have no recommendations on 3rd party cartridge vendors.  Google around abit and see what you can find.  As long as the vendor has a return policy for duds that you can agree with then its worth giving them a shot.  The vendor should be able to certify or gauruntee that thier product is compatbile with the printer.  When issues like cert updates are pushed out the vendor should be able to refund your money or provide a replacement as a part of that service.

HP doesnt make formal announcements when they retire cartridges for current or legacy printer models.  You normally buy them from one source as long as you can and then search for another.  When the sources dry up then search for a new printer model.

In my search for answers, I saw lists of cartridges discontinued a few years back, so it seems HP made such announcements in the past.

And not knowing when an essential supply is discontinued may work for consumers with cheap subsidized inkjets that can be thrown away at little cost.  But it doesn't work for serious business printers that cost a lot more, where servicing the printer with parts rated for years of future usage requires confidence that the basic supplies aren't suddenly cut off at a whim.

For now I have found a supplier claiming to still offer the toners (at inflated prices), but I'm guessing the company won't buy anymore HP printers if that's HP's new level of business dependability.
