HP LaserJet Pro M281fdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am setting up a new HP LaserJet Pro M281fdw  but I keep getting the error that "supplies are in the wrong position."  Apparently one or more toner cartridges aren't installed properly. I've removed each toner multiple times and reinserted, but I keep getting the error, so I can't print anything. This printer is brand new out of the box. What am I doing wrong?  I'm about ready to put it back in the box and return it, since I'm thinking something was damaged in shipping, but I'd like to try to see if there's something I'm missing first.

Since the printer is brand new your first step should be to call HP support and take advantage of the warranty.  If there is a problem then HP will swap it out with no charge to you.

This error suggests that you have your CMKY cartridges installed in the incorrect order.  Check the labels on the cartridges and the cartridge bay.  The order of the cartridges is important, you cant plug a black cartridge into the cyan or any others.  Reseat the cartridges in the correct areas/positions and then consider giving HP a call.

The cartridges were indeed installed in the incorrect order.  It didn't occur to me that they would have been installed in the wrong order from the factory, since I've never had that happen before.  Once I looked for the labels on the bay, I matched them up and voila - the printer recognized them.  Thanks!
