Running into this issue now with a brand new Windows 10 machine.  Was there any resolution to your issue?

What if you need the 64 bit driver?

I had this same issue on my wife's Windows 10 64x laptop. I tried using the full install pkg that I downloaded from the HP site 3 times and after 20 min. and 99% it would fail with an error (what a joke HP). I also downloaded the latest HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PCL6 (64-bit) and installed it to see if that would work.

When the printer is plugged in via USB it was getting recognized as an HP CD drive on her laptop presumably because the printer was not being recognized by Windows 10 as a printer.  From the Devices and Printers list in Control Panel, I selected the HP CD drive and from the right-click dropdown menu I select update driver. Windows 10 went out and seemed to find the driver and recognized the printer as the M451dn. It now shows up in my list of printers and works perfectly with the USB connection. Hope this helps someone so they don't waste the same amount of time I did trying to get this to work.
