This sounds like a scanner/copy problem, not a printing problem.
Considering that a copy from the flatbed scanner works correctly we can conclude two things:
1. The scanner is functioning correctly when given a light tight document
2. The printer is able to print documents without a toner cartridge or laser printing defect
That leaves you with the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) as the remaining piece of the puzzle that is not working. Some times when light sneaks into the ADF it can produce lines or grey results. Id bet the strip that seperates the paper from the glass is bent or damage to the point where extra light is sneaking into your ADF copies.
Open up the ADF and the scanner bed and take a look where the paper would normally hit the scanning glass. Make sure everything looks tight and firm. Sometimes there is crud or the seal has peeled away from accidental cleaning.
If not and the problem is only produced from the ADF then the next step is to replace the ADF or the entire scanner assembly. IF you have warranty on the printer then contact HP to take advantage of the options they have for you. If not then contact a printer repair tech in your area and ask for a quote.
