HP OfficeJet 4650 All-in-One Printer series
Chrome OS

Just got a Chromebook and despite registering my printer with Drive and Cloudprint I cannot get the printer to print. The instructions shows as gone to printer, but nothing shows on my printer. Then a message comes on the Chromebook to say Printer Failes?Any ideas why this is happening?

Since my original email, I tried the print function again on the Chromebook by going to Google Drive, selecting a Word doc (one that I'd imported to it from my HP laptop which uses Windows 10) and this time I then 'downloaded' it to Microsoft and hey presto, it printed ok. It seems odd cos I imagined that importing it to Drive would achieve the same as a download?

I'm not too impressed that it seems to be this convoluted to be honest!

When I contruct a letter/document  on the Chromebook itself (it's called a 'file' on Chromebook) it seems to print off without problems. It's just this palaver to do with the stuff I've imported.

I've been a big HP fan for years, and I'm not sure I have done the right thing in switching to a Google Chromebook, especially if I have these sorts of problems.

@Getset

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂

I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

As I understand you need help with printing on Chromebook,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Are you using the Google cloud print?

Or the HP ePrint?

While you respond to that, here's what you need to know:

Step 1: Determine your printer connection type

Printing methods differ depending on whether your printer is connected with a USB cable or to the same wireless network as your Chromebook.

  • USB connection: The HP Print for Chrome app supports printing through the Chrome browser to USB connected printers. Simply connect the USB cable, install HP Print for Chrome (in English), and then follow the onscreen instructions to enable the app. Go to Printing with the HP Print for Chrome App for detailed steps and answers to frequently asked questions.

  • Wireless network connection: The HP Print for Chrome app supports printing through the Chrome browser over a local wireless network. Or continue with these steps to print over a local network or remotely with Google Cloud Print.

Step 2: Determine your HP printer type

The steps to set up and register your printer for Google Cloud Print are different depending on whether your printer is a Google Cloud Print Ready printer, an HP ePrint printer, or a non-HP ePrint printer.

If you know already your printer type, skip to the next step to Register your printer with Google Cloud Print.

Look for a Google Cloud Print logo, an HP ePrint logo, or an HP ePrint button or icon  on your printer control panel. If the control panel does not have a logo, button, or icon, navigate to the Network Setup or Wireless Settings menu to locate the Web Services menu.

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.

I found that if I then downloaded the file to Microsoft from MyDrive, it does print ok. This seems an unwieldy and clunky way of doing things, but is this something I'm just going to have to get used to doing if I want to print off from my chromebook? ( appreciate Chromebook is not really meant for those who like to have loads of Folders and files of documents, but I hadn't appreciated just how difficult it was going to be. I'm seriously thinking of reverting back to an HP laptop using Word, and 'ditching' the Chromebook)

@Getset

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

I appreciate the update,

That said, If you haven't found anything that helped you, using the link I had shared either,

I'm afraid with the limited options on Chromebook or chrome OS overall, I have nothing more to add to it.

I hope the solution you've found works and could be further simplified in the future.

As of now we are out of options.
