OfficeJet Pro 6970
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi there,

I have two OfficeJet Pro 6970 of which one is enrolled in InstantInk.

On the other (un-enrolled) printer, my cartridges were empty and I disposed them. Now I would like to enroll it to InstantInk as well.

Problem:

To enroll it, I need a claim code for registration in HP SMART.

But:

- I can't print the claim code as I don't have any cartridge to print from

- I can't access the claim code on the display as the display is "locked" saying that I need to insert cartridges.

I tried inserting the cartridges from the other printer but for sure this didn't work as they can only be used in the enrolled printer (InstantInk).

I tried couple of hours to get the claim code via the App, EWS, whatever. At a certain point in time, the printer appeared finally in my instant ink account and it had a claim code (better to say: it had an xyz@hpeprint.com adress assigned). But then it disappeared again. The claim code is not valid anymore and I simply cannot reproduce this anymore!

I called the hotline but they just told me to buy new cartridges to get the printer to print the claim code.. which is not what I want!

So: anybody out there that knows a workaround on how to get the claim code?

By the way: on the EWS, I see a link that shall "register" the printer in HP Smart. This link has as parameters the SN of the printer, Model Name and "Cloud ID". The Cloud ID won't be accepted as a claim code as it is too long. But this link doesn't work as it is pointing to an HP Server that cannot be resolved by any DNS: http://h30495.www3.hp.com/. what's this mistery about? Maybe the registration would be successfull if I could enter this link with all the parameters in it leading to a successfull enrollment??? I couldn't find any IP of that server as it seems to be offline and all relating DNS entries are deleted... how comes?

thanks a lot!

Welcome to HP Support Community

I would like to help

For printers with control panel displays, you can still get the printer claim code by pressing the HP ePrint icon on the control panel display and selecting Set Up or Yes to enable Web Services.

Your printer attempts to print a page. If Web Services are already enabled on your printer, you see a Web Services Summary screen after pressing the HP ePrint icon.

If enabled, press Print or Print Info to print the Printer Info Page. Even though you cannot print the page, the action of enabling Web Services or pressing Print or Print Info activates your claim code.

Find your HP ePrint email address on the control panel display. Press the ePrint icon again if the Web Services Summary screen goes away.

The first part of the HP ePrint address preceding "@hpeprint.com" is your claim code. For example, if your HP ePrint email is "abc@hpeprint.com", then "abc" is your claim code.

Thank you

As staed in my original post,

- I can neither print

- nor access the printer menu on the display.

HP seems to design its printers in a way that they turn into a brick once you take out the cartridges and perform a semi-full-reset.

I cannot press anything on the screen. it says I shall insert the cartridges that were delivered with the printer.

@krazytoad: my question is literally: how can i get the claim code without pressing anything on the printer's screen and without printing a page. alternatively, HP could be so kind and send me some cartirdges so that I can print the the info page to enroll to InstantInk.

thanks!

@rutra

Thank you for the details

Unfortunately since the control panel is blocked and you are unable to navigate, right now there is no other work around, You will need to get the cartridges replaced then only you can print the claim code and sign up for Instant Ink

Thank you

Hi KrazyToad,

Thanks for the bad but honest news. One of many moments I regret to habe bought two HP printers...

Can you check on the second part of my original post, please (starting with "By the way"). I still don't get why EWS is pointing at a server that seems to be down...

Thanks!

Please ensure the printer has the latest Firmware https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c02919168

Next try assigning a Manual IP Address and then try connecting to EWS again

- Print a Network Config Page from the printer. Note the printer's IP address.

- Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.

- Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.

- On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you do not know the range, change the last set of numbers (those after the last '.') to 250

- Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)

- Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway.

- Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS. This is Google DNS.

- Click 'Apply'.
