When I print an envelope from the main paper tray, it doesn't center the message on the envelope.  I just get the last half of my envelope design.  I'm using Greeting Card Factory software.  If I fasten my envelope onto the center top of a piece of paper, it will print correctly--but I risk getting a bigtime paper jam.  Help!

I cannot help with Card Factory Software - never used it.

That said, there are preparation steps you can follow that might help.

Load Paper

Load the envelopes according to the instructions in the User Guide

Pages 19-20

Pay attention to the Feed and rotation requirements.

=================================================================

Next,

Make sure the full driver printer software is installed.

Printer Software Check

Notes

If the full driver printer software is installed, you will see the printer listed in Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features.

In addition, the installed software places two shortcut icons on the Desktop named for the printer.

Programs_and_Features_Printer_Desktop_Icons_1Programs_and_Features_Printer_Desktop_Icons_1

Printer software not installed?

Method - Use the Easy Start Wrapper to Install the Full Feature / Full Driver Software

For printers that support the option,

Use the Easy Start wrapper to install and configure the printer software.

  • Home Page - HP Easy Start
  • Open Category Software and Drivers
  • Topic: Software-Utility
  • Download-and-Save  the current version of the Easy Start wrapper to install your print software
  • If using USB:  Disconnect the USB cable between the printer and computer before installing the software.
  • Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator" to start the installation
  • Select to install the “Full Driver” / “Full Feature Software”
  • If using USB:  Connect the cable when instructed to do so (near the end of the installation process).
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in.

Notes >> Easy Start... The Journey

  1. Full Administrator Rights are required to complete the HP Software installation.
  2. About 2/3 of the way through the setup, you will be given the opportunity to select the software - select the "Full Driver" set (as opposed to the basic driver or other application).
  3. You can skip / ignore suggestion(s) that you add the HP Account – you’ll need the account at some point, for now, you can skip this suggestion (as many times as it insists it’s a good idea) during the full driver software installation.
  4. If you see it, you can skip / ignore suggestion(s) regarding Instant Ink subscription.  Instant Ink subscription is NOT mandatory.
  5. Full driver includes print and scan functions supported by your printer and provides the printer features on which other applications / software might depend.

What about the envelope?

The printer supports custom sizes.

Media Sizes Custom (imperial)Simplex:3x5 to 8.5x14; Duplex:3 x 5.5 to 8.5 x 12.2 in
Media Sizes Custom (metric)Simplex: 76.2 x 127 mm to 216x594mm; Duplex: 76.2 x 127 mm to 216x594mm

HP Document:

HP Printers - Creating Custom Paper Sizes

That said, envelopes have additional restrictions - not all envelope sizes print.

For example, in spite the the paper size being supported, if an envelope is not large enough, it may not print.

You might get an error - this depends on the software you are using and what the printer perceives as the problem.

Plus...Envelopes cannot be foil-lined, odd colors, or have scalloped edges.

If you wish to do so,

try / consider testing the setup:

Create your envelope using Word > Mailings > Envelopes

Example - Word > Mailings > Envelopes - A7 envelope with information for "custom" dimensions setup

I appreciate all the detailed help that you sent.  It helped a lot--especially with another problem I had with not being able to use the paper feed tray on top of my printer.  As for downloading the drivers and getting the advanced set of drivers that you mentioned, I followed your instructions and thought it had gone perfectly, but when I looked at the add/remove programs listing, only the basic drivers listed as loaded.  It took a lot of time and I can't imagine what I did wrong.

As for printing the envelopes, I need to know what program or software on my Windows 10 will create an envelope.  I can't find one.  My free Word basic will only let me make basic documents or spreadsheets--no envelope choice.  Any suggestions?

The word "basic" in the name is OK.

What?

There are a number of names, naming conventions, bits and parts the comprise the full driver printer software.

Names of the installation packages have changed, names of the software as seen on the computer have changed, and the software itself has changed over the years.

If you look at the example I posted in my first message   ( Programs_and_Features_Printer_Desktop_Icons_1 ), you'll see that the name of the software in Programs and Features is designated as "Basic".  The software is the "full driver".

==================================================================================

Create Envelope

I have always had access to Word of different flavors and versions.

People who post at the Community sometimes comment on various card-making software.  Admittedly, when they are commenting here, the card making software is not working as expected so the mention of using it is certainly not an endorsement of using any particular brand of card making software to create an envelope.

What else?

You can create an envelope using Word - not sure if "Word Basic" counts as "Word" for this purpose, though it might work if your version of Word at least provides the basics of being able to change / modify the document page size to the size / shape of your envelope.

Hint:  Create your envelope "right reading", that is, short sides left / right, long sides top / bottom as if you are holding the envelope in front of you and reading the address.  Load the envelope into the printer according to the instructions in the

User Guide Pages 19-20 .   Short sides front / back, Flap up.  Pay attention to the Feed and rotation requirements.  Print in Landscape

Thanks again for the excellent help.  I checked the printer software as you directed in your first and second responses.  I have the HP ENVY Oro +500 series Basic Device Software installed on 10/27/2020 (when I installed my printer) and I do have the two icons on my desktop that you showed in your example, both were created on October 27, 2020.  I'm hoping this means I have the full printer driver set that you said to download.

As for the envelope, I'm 78, retired, used MS Word for years and years, but don't need it now that I'm longer needing to make professional documents and lMS Word software now costs $60 per year.  I'm using WPS Office by Kingsoft Corp. for about $5 per year, but I can only create a basic document and can't even change the margins.  So thanks for the help and all the time.  You have helped tremendously and I will save your messages in case I need them.

Updates

Add "Method 2" example - Create document in size / shape of envelope

You are welcome.

Sometimes we cannot make the answer fit the restrictions of the environment.

Meh.  Was worth an attempt.

Envelopes of various sizes are supported though there are come common restrictions:

  • Envelopes cannot be too thick, foil lined, scalloped, or other than white or cream colored.
  • Envelopes cannot be too small - "too small" is not directly related to the smallest size of custom paper supported - instead it has to do with the formula used for "envelopes" and whatever software you are using.
  • Not all envelope software treats an envelope in the same way - this is not related to what the printer can do and instead is part of the restrictions in the software.

If you decide to do so, try / consider LibreOffice

LibreOffice includes "Word"-ish software that can create an envelope.

Envelope size can be selected from a list or made as a custom size.

Delivery and Return addresses can be positioned / moved.

Partial Example - LibreOffice Writer

Method 1 - "Insert" an envelope into a document

Open Writer

Insert > Envelope

Tab Format

Select Size and enter positioning information

After the Envelope is "created",

Select font / size - fill in Delivery and Return Addresses

These are "text boxes" and can be moved around where needed.

Click on the edge of the text box area to "open" and move.

Writer_Envelope_Format_2Writer_Envelope_Format_2

Method 2 - Create a document in the size / shape of an envelope

Example

Writer_Envelope_Format_3Writer_Envelope_Format_3

Disclaimer

Examples are based on having used the software one time.  Errors are likely....

Will that work?

Maybe.

I've just downloaded / installed the LibreOffice software so I don't have a lot of information on it yet.

Might be worth a look.
