HP ENVY 5542 All-in-One Printer

When I print from my iPad HP Smart App says paper tray open or empty. It prints fine from my Mac and from my pc, but not from my iPad. I have not had this problem until this week, and I have owned the printer long enough that it is out of warranty.

Try these steps:

Verify Paper Tray:

  • Ensure the paper tray is properly closed and there is paper loaded correctly. Adjust the paper-width guides snugly against the paper stack without them being too tight.

Use AirPrint:

  • Ensure that your printer is AirPrint compatible, which most HP Envy models are. Try printing directly from your iPad using AirPrint instead of the HP Smart App.
  • To do this, open the document or photo you want to print, tap the Share icon and select Print.

Check Network Connection:

  • Ensure your iPad and printer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. This is crucial for successful wireless printing.
  • Restart your router to refresh the network connection.

Update HP Smart App:

  • Ensure that the HP Smart App on your iPad is updated to the latest version available in the App Store.

Reinstall HP Smart App:

  • Try uninstalling and then reinstalling the HP Smart App on your iPad. This can often resolve app-specific issues.

Restart All Devices:

  • Restart your iPad, printer, and router. This can often resolve connectivity issues.

Firmware Update:

  • Check for any available firmware updates for your HP Envy printer through the HP Smart App or the printer's control panel options. Make sure your printer firmware is up to date.
