I replaced my HP Envy 4520 with HP Smart Tank 6000. I is non functional and being replaced.
So I am trying to use my HP Photosmart Plus as a backup in the interim.
I am getting an error message "Out of paper Load paper into mail tray"
There is paper loaded. The printer does not seem to pick up the sheet.
Any suggestions to repair would be appreciated.

Hi @BlB69,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
I understand that you are having issues with the Out of paper". Load paper error.
The "Out of paper" or "Load paper" error on your HP Photosmart Plus All-In-One Printer - B209a can be caused by several issues, including paper tray alignment, paper feed rollers, or software glitches. Here are steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
1. Check the Paper Tray and Paper:
- Ensure Proper Loading: Make sure the paper is loaded correctly in the paper tray.
- Align the stack of paper by tapping it on a flat surface.
- Load the paper into the tray and adjust the paper width guides so they rest gently against the edges of the paper.
- Use the Correct Paper: Ensure you're using paper that is compatible with your printer. Avoid wrinkled or folded paper.
- Check Paper Size and Type Settings: Ensure that the paper size and type settings in the printer software match the paper loaded in the tray.
Clean the Paper Feed Rollers:
- Over time, paper feed rollers can become dirty or worn out, leading to paper feed issues.
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Open the access door and locate the paper feed rollers.
- Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to clean the rollers.
- Allow the rollers to dry completely before closing the printer and reconnecting it.
Reset the Printer:
- Sometimes, resetting the printer can clear any error messages.
- With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
- Wait for at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet and then into the printer.
- Turn on the printer and check if the error is resolved.
Check for Paper Jams:
- Inspect the printer for any paper jams or obstructions.
- Open all accessible areas of the printer and gently remove any jammed paper.
- Ensure no small pieces of paper are stuck inside.
The remaining steps will be shared in the next post, kindly check.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

- Visit the HP support website and search for your printer model.
- Download and install any available firmware or software updates.
6. Perform a Printer Diagnostic:
- Use the printer’s built-in diagnostic tools to identify and resolve issues.
- Access the printer’s menu and navigate to the diagnostic tools or maintenance section.
- Follow the prompts to run a paper feed diagnostic.
7. Try a Different Paper:
- Sometimes, specific types or batches of paper can cause issues.
- Try using a different type or brand of paper to see if the problem persists.
8. Check Printer Settings:
- Ensure that the printer settings in your computer match the paper loaded in the tray.
- Go to Devices and Printers on your computer.
- Right-click your printer and select Printing preferences.
