Printer works perfectly, just won't charge internal battery. Amber lamp solid for approx 1 hour then starts flashing, battery status says battery is faulty. Battery level hasn't increased much, maybe a few %. Purchased a genuine HP battery, same result so Printer is faulty. Manual suggests it will charge in 2.5 hours which suggests a charge level of 5W or about 400mA. If you charge the battery from the USB, printer off, no AC etc. the amber light does the same steady then flash routine. I've used a USB Doctor / Power meter and it tells me the consumption is 1.18W or 0.23A, at this rate the battery would charge in 10 hours or so. If you repeatidly remove/insert the USB it does indeed charge, eventually. Is 0.23A right?? Has anyone else got a 200 who can confirm this USB check?. Does the printer only charge at 5W if it establishes battery authenticity, got plenty of HP laptop experience with them playing up, not charging, reduced workability if you dare insert a non-HP AC adaptor, just thinking this is normal HP behaviour. Having purchased a genuine HP battery only to find it doing the same is disappointing. I'd like a few answers before I start tearing it apart. I don't think its a hardward issue as it does charge (eventually), I think this is more software related. Anyone from HP care to comment?

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

The battery installed in the printer is charged when the printer is connected to an electrical supply through a power cable. Charging the battery using AC power can take up to 2.5 hours. If AC power is removed and the printer is turned off, the battery can also be charged when the USB port on the rear of the printer is connected to the charging USB port of another device. The charging USB port must be able to supply a minimum of 1A. For example: ● USB charging port on a notebook computer identified by a lightning symbol near the host port) ● USB charger that is connected to a wall outlet (can be generic or one used for mobile phones or tablets) ● USB charger that is connected to the power port in a car (can be generic or one used for mobile phones or tablets)

Hello @Betty0610,

Thankyou for taking the time to give advice, everything you have said I have tried. I don't waste my time with USB ports on computers / AC adaptors, I use a bench power supply and tools I trust when servicing equipment. What I really would like is more in depth information, like, if the printer is charging via USB what sort of current would you expect the printer to draw. More importantly, why, having purchased a genuine HP battery does it charge for about 1-2 hours and then flash the amber charging light, regardless of AC or USB charging. It does charge but only about 5%/hour which doesn't reflect the user manual or what you stated. It would be great to have a engineering level discussion OR where can I purchase a service manual and how much would it cost me? There must be another OfficeJet 200 owners who could quickly check the charge current over USB so that I can compare mine.. You state (as per user manual) that the printer can take up to 2.5 hours to charge via the AC, what sort of time would you expect from the USB?

regards

Well, Betty0610, I've found the serial communications between printer and battery is GOOD, so it's not that stopping the printer charging the battery. It's so frustrating that this barely used printer (<20 pages) is faulty and no body took advantage of the warranty. I have spent hours trying to get a contact at HP through the support pages and I just go round and round in circles. Obviously I'm wasting my breath trying to get any service info for this unit, I've tried numberous repair establishments leaving me with a "Saved search" on eBay for a faulty printer. I'd rather just buy a new motherboard for it but it seems no-one at HP is interested.
