@myles5, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Try making a Standalone Black and Color Copy on the printer and check if that works.

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Update the printer firmware

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Check ink levels

On the printer, touch Settings, touch Tools, and then touch Estimated Ink Levels.

If any ink cartridges are critically low or empty, replace them with new genuine HP ink cartridges.

Print a Quality Diagnostic report

On the printer, touch Settings, touch Tools, and then touch Print Quality Report.

Let me know how this goes.

6520 has new ink and I have run the diagnostics.  Black ink will not print and the steps listed in what the virtual assistant brought up did not cure the problem.  Is there a way to remove the brick?  "Cartridge Error" messages on an old Lexmark I have led to this as a part of their recovery/repair process.  Is there something similar with the HP?

HP Photosmart 6520 e-All-in-One Printer has an integrated Printhead and cannot be removed.

Make sure the protective tape from the new ink cartridge is removed before inserting the ink cartridge in the printer.

Also, check the ink levels on the printer

On the printer, touch Settings, touch Tools, and then touch Estimated Ink Levels.

Touch Settings, touch Tools, and then touch Clean Printhead.

Check the ink cartridge vents

Follow step 3 from this document

Print a Quality Diagnostic report

On the printer, touch Settings, touch Tools, and then touch Print Quality Report.

Let me know how this goes.

Having done everything that all these good folk have done following all of HP guidelines, replacing all HP 364 cartridges, carried out resets, cleaned contacts and heads numerous time no black printing. Did manage after a thorough clean to get it printing just right following UTube site remedy only to find that by switching printer off then later switching it back on back to square one.  Up until now it has performed well over a two year period, then this frustrating fault. The screen now displays a permanent Cartridge Damage or missing Cartridge warning and no amount of resetting or carrying out HP procedures allow me to get the default start up screen.

To date I have always used HP printers both commercially and in the military without this type of fault. HP have always had a good reputation but as a chartered engineer I expect more from them. I might add that I have an Epson printer which is still going strong after 20 years! Can anyone add their trials at rectifying this fault befor it goes in the skip!

My printer worked fine the last time i used it. I bought a new black ink cartridge and tried to print a document and the paper just comes out blank

Do all ink cartridges need to have ink in them to print a page with black ink,

My colored inks may be empty does that make a difference if trying to print in black and white?
