I keep getting the message "Printer is unavailable" when trying to print from my Android phone using HP Officejet 4622 despite all settings being set correctly including the IP address. The printer is connected to my router and has the same IP address as my phone, all devices are located in the same room. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app to no avail. The HP app connects randomly only 20% of the time. Other reviewers complain about this but it looks like nothing has been done to remedy this issue. Has anyone found a solution to this problem?

Hi @Qt12,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the issue of "Printer is unavailable" on your HP Officejet 4622 e-All-in-One Printer when printing from an Android phone can be frustrating. Here are some steps and potential solutions to help resolve this issue:

Check Network Connection:

  • Ensure that your printer and Android phone are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Sometimes, devices might connect to different bands (2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz) of the same network, which can cause issues.
  • Restart your router, printer, and phone to refresh the network connections.

Assign a Static IP Address:

  • Sometimes, assigning a static IP address to your printer can help maintain a stable connection. You can do this via your router’s settings.
  • Access your router settings (usually through a web browser by typing the router's IP address), find the DHCP settings, and assign a static IP to your printer.

Update Firmware and App: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up to date. You can check for firmware updates on the HP support website or through the printer’s control panel.
  • Make sure the HP Smart app on your Android phone is updated to the latest version.

HP Print Service Plugin:

  • Install the HP Print Service Plugin from the Google Play Store. This plugin can help facilitate better communication between your phone and the printer.
  • After installation, enable the plugin in your phone’s settings (Settings > Printing > HP Print Service Plugin).

Check Printer Settings:

  • On the printer, go to the Network settings and ensure that the wireless connection is active and that the IP address matches what your phone detects.
  • Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer’s control panel to verify the network settings.

Reset Network Settings:

  • Reset the printer’s network settings and reconnect it to your Wi-Fi network. This can often resolve connectivity issues.
  • Refer to the printer manual for steps on how to reset network settings.

Test with Another Device:

  • Try printing from another device (like a computer or another phone) to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is specific to your Android phone.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your reply Gaya,

I have the same IP address on my phone, printer and on my computer. The plug-in was installed about the same time as HP Smart years ago which is when the issue started. I tried, clearing the cache, uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. HP 4622 is ancient so I don't think there are anymore firmware updates for this device, same with my PC which is about 10 years old and runs on Windows 7.

I have no idea how to set up a static IP address but will try to give it a shot if you think it could help resolve the issue which occurs on my older phone as well as my Android 14 phone and PC.

When you brought up that the 2G versus 5G connection could be causing the problem, I thought it made sense since my phones are 5G capable and I think that my old PC and printer are only 2G compatible but if the problem was the connection, then there shouldn't be a communication issue between my PC and printer since they're both on 2G right?

The fact that this occurs randomly baffles me. Each time, I try all the troubleshooting suggestions to no avail and then out of the blue, 20 minutes to an hour later, the printer begins doing its job 🤷‍♀️.

I appreciate your input and hope to be able to resolve this soon.

Hello Gaya, how do I find the DHCP setting on my printer? I see it on my phone when I go to connections but I don't know how to find it on my printer. Thank you
