Hello I'm afraid following all the above steps didn't help for me. I'm on Win 10 Pro with an HP Envy 5640 all-in-one printer.
When I try to print a document direct from Word or pdf, or using Hp Smart, I continue to get "Your printer has experienced an unexpected configuration problem 0x80004005". When I click on printer Properties I get a dialogue box error "Function address 0xb6095549 caused a protection fault ... Some or all property page(s) may not be displayed" - C:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe.
This after a complete re-install of Windows 10 Pro and continued installs/uninstalls of HP Envy 5640 software from the HP site. I will have to continue emailing documents to my husband because this problem seems unsolvable!
If anyone has further ideas then I'd be happy to try them.

Welcome to HP Support Community
I suggest you uninstall the printer driver from root level once again
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
6.) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the “Drivers” tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Restart the computer
Then install the Windows Built-In driver. You can refer to this Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01796879

Hi there. Thanks for your suggestions. Unfortunately I've tried uninstall/reinstall many times without success. The solution, for me at least, was to simply ADD another printer (the same one), and set that as the default, but without deleting the original one. I have no idea why this miracously worked but it has.
