The pamphlet was in the new HP DeskJet 4100 I purchased from Best Buy.  It says there to go to 123.hp.com to install as required for setup.  Snowballed from there and I was told my drives are corrupted and needs to be reset and then was asked to put in key license numbers I can purchase but will be refunded after.  Yup -- never refunded and hp printer still not connected.  What on earth?  I have never been scammed before and this pamphlet was so believable because it was inside the package! Was this packed in some other so they were able to put in this paper that seems so legit?

@FioreF

I am sorry this happened - it was not the "real" HP 123 website that took you for such a terrible ride.

There are not rats, scams, or sneaky vermin at the actual website.

There ARE dozens of look-alike scam sites that have caused trouble for the unwary.

That said,

  • I will submit a request that someone take a look.

         Worth Noting

  • Please know that our Community is not HP Technical Support.
  • Our request for assistance on your behalf does not influence the outcome:  Our request is not a magic back door into HP.
  • The time frame (how long it takes) for a response is not controlled by the Community.
  • When there is a response, a Community moderator / agent will (should) post back on this thread before using other methods to contact you.

         Note to those reading:

  • Do not contact random numbers posted in a public or private message by “new members”.  Vermin are looking for victims – don’t be next.
  • Please do not post any personal or case information here - we cannot make use of the data.
  • Posting personal information at a public site increases your risk from rats and scammers.

Beware of Fake "123" Sites

The "Real Deal"

123.hp.com - Printer setup from the HP® Official site

https://123.hp.com/

The official HP 123 site is where you can find the appropriate (and free) software and drivers for your printer.

The official HP 123 site is not a website where odd chat boxes pop up on the screen and someone tries to offer you "Services" if you would just give out your credit card and information. Not.

  • There are several “fake” sites listed (in search engines) for “123” – please make sure you are using the actual “HP” site.

  • Notice the website address – the real HP site does not contain any extra verbiage.  For example, there is no “setup” or other extra bits in the address.

  • HP websites are the only websites allowed to use the HP copyright circle/logo.  Look for the copyright on any website claiming to be HP. If in doubt, scroll to the bottom of the Website to find HP copyright logo.  Example:  “© Copyright <year> HP Development Company, L.P.”

  • If you are asked for money to correct "issues" on your computer OR if the “help” wants to log into your computer, you are using a “fake” site. Do not give these people your information!

So I bought a new printer, an All in one desk jet 5258.

I see that you claim to be an HP support agent and see that you were going to create a case for @FloreF regarding the scam.

Did you?   I want to know because I just underwent that same experience and like a fool I let those bastards into my files.   So if they are inserting malware into the computers of the suckers like me who let them roam freely in our machines, it would be good to know.

I have a mac and I have the proscribed apple software for malware on an apple computer (Malwarebytes).   Nothing has shown up so far.

So did you communicate this problem to higher-ups?   was there any action taken?   It's a scam right out of the box, and right in the startup documentation or am I wrong?  Not only that but Apple support offers that website's link to it's users.   It took me more than half a day to get the new printer running and I still don't think I got everything that is necessary.  I didn't register the printer for one thing.   I don't know if there is scanning software that goes with it either.
