I've had this problem since I bought the printer last year. I hate it. It doesn't stay "online" for printing from any devices. However, it does work with eprint. I try to print something and it is "offline". I press the power button to "wake" it up and still nothing. It won't work unless I go into the control panel and actually add it again.

This is the worst HP Printer I've had. Why can't it just stay connected?!

Read and follow the solutions in the documents and video help:

From Dragon document Install Full Feature Software - Printer

Section: Printer is Offline

Example:

  1. How-to “Create TCP Port” Contributed by greenturtle

Create TCP IP port

1. Print a Configuration Page to get the printer's IPv4 address (you can also tap on the wireless icon on the Front panel of your Printer to get the IP address)
2. On your PC, go to Control Panel, from Devices and Printers, right click the printer and left click Printer Properties, select the Ports tab.
3. Click Add Port, select Standard TCP/IP Port, then select New Port and follow the wizard.
4. Type in the proper IP address for the printer.

This video resource will show you how to do it:
Create & Use TCP IP port

Note that you can ALWAYS revert back to the original port that the HP software installed by selecting the HP port under the Ports tab (in Printer Properties)

I did that with no problems and it worked for 2 days. Now it's not showing up at all and I have to reinstall it and the software from HP says it's not on my network yet the HP Network Configuration Page that I printed says that it is and gives me an IP address and Host name to use but nothing can find it.

I don't know the answer.

In particular since the issue has been going on for so long, it is possible that the issue is (and always has been)

  • Related to the printer itself (hardware),
  • The network configuration is (and has been) faulty , set up incorrectly, or the configuration is not ideal,
  • The router is failing to do its job (weak, needs firmware, other),
  • The location of the equipment is not ideal for signal transfer (router and / or printer needs to be moved),
  • Other unidentified issue

Remember that ePrint does not use the same protocol as does the printer software.  ePrint accesses the printer via the Internet and uses an "email" address to send jobs directly to the printer.

Because the printer has (at least on occasion) worked wirelessly, see:

Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection

In GENERAL, this model of printer works as expected using a Wireless connection.

When things stop working for "no reason" that you can discern, Restart everything (including the router).

If you decide to reinstall the printer software, first remove the existing printer software (from Programs and Features) > Restart the computer and log in > Install the printer Software > Restart the computer and log in.

If the printer is still under warranty, contact HP for help.
