Hello all,
My Moto X and my OfficeJet 8610 are on the same wireless subnet(192.168.3.178 and 192.168.3.4). Using the HP AIO Remote app on my Moto X I cannot find my printer. When I run a packet trace from my Moto X I notice that it is trying to use a generic broadcast, which is not allowed and is being dropped by my firewall. Is there any way to change this to multicast, or is there another way to get these connected?
Thanks,
Steve

Hey @StevePetrillo,
I see that you are having some issues with printing from your Android to your Officejet 8610 e-All-In-One Printer. I can help you with that.
To start, make sure the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet and not a surge protector. Once done:
- Turn the printer and the Android off.
- While the devices are powered off, remove the power cable from the back of the router for one minute.
- When the lights return on the router, turn the printer and the Android on.
At this point the app should be able to detect the router. If it is not able to see the printer then the next step is to contact your internet provider or whoever provided you with the router and ask them to do the following:
- Open all ports.
- Enable Multicasting.
- Disable MAC filtering/MAC cloning.
- Disable the guest network.
- Make sure the router is broadcasting a 2.4GHz (Giga-Hertz) band and that both devices are connected to that band.
Please let me know the results after following the above. If you are able to print, please click on Accept Solution. If you appreciate my help, please click on the thumbs up icon. Both icons are below this post.

This is not a router but a Sonicwall firewall. Both the printer and the Android device are in the same subnet. Multicast is enabled. There is no guest network, nor is MAC filtering/MAC cloning being used.
What ports does the Android app and printer talk on? Second why does the app send out a broadcast when mulitcast would be preferable. You mention mulitcast but my packet trace shows the app sends out a full broadcast(255.255.255.255).
Thanks,
Steve

If you are using a firewall, it may help to open the following ports:
Incoming (UDP) ports : 137, 138, 161, 427 Outgoing (TCP) ports : 137, 139, 427, 9100, 9220, 9500
Also open port 625.
Please let me know the results after following the above.

One other thing that you might be missing is that this is the same subnet, so then I should not have to open ports. My wireless printer is 192.168.3.4 and my Android phone is 192.168.3.178. Again the broadcast seems to be the issue here. The phone issues a full on broadcast, rather than a multicast. The firewall interprets the broadcast as a potential storm and drops the packets. There is nothing that can be done on the firewall side. The change needs to come from the app side, and change it to multicast.

If the printer is still not able to communicate, that sounds like there is a setting on your firewall that is blocking communication that is outside of normal troubleshooting. I suggest either disabling the firewall or contacting SonicWall to determine why it is preventing communication.
Please let me know the results after disabling the firewall or contacting SonicWall.
