- Wireless connection is "hogging" my bandwidth on router

Up until this week, I have always connected my computer to my router via direct ethernet cable. But recently I had to move my router to a different location so decided to use the wireless feature on my printer for connection to my computer (laptop). When I noticed that my wireless connection speed to the interet was substantially reduced I started checking all of the computer products in my home (two IPAD's, one desktop and my laptop). What I discovered is my 8620 was "hogging" the bandwidth of the wirelss connection to the router. Even when the printer is not being used (but turned on) it continues to reduce the speed of my computer connection. I discovered this by:
a) I turned all computers & IPADs off but left the printer on --- the WiFi LED light on the router continued to flash like crazy
b) I turned my printer off with my computer turned on and the connection speed instantly jumped up about 3 X the speed
So, with the printer turned off, my connection speed to the computer is about 3 times faster. I don't quite understand this and wonder why the printer wireless connection to the router is "hogging" my bandwidth when the printer is not even being used?
Anyone have an idea?
