I cannot connect my HP ENVY 5540 All-in-One printer to my computer using the Wi-Fi Direct. The wifi direct on the printer is turned on and is set to automatic. I then go to settings(on the computer), then I click Devices, and then click on Add Printers or Scanner. It will detect my printer and I click add, and it will try to connect, but then the message comes up "try again, and make sure your printer is still discoverable". I keep refreshing the devices within range to try and add the printer again and again, but that same message comes up.
I've also had it further away from the laptop (originally) and tried adding the printer, and it came up with the prompt to type in the pin so I could connect. But even then it would try to connect, but wouldn't work, and eventually the message on the printer screen said something about it being timed out after taking to long to connect. I need help : /

Hey @th0r44,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I see that you are having some issues with connecting your Windows 10 PC to your Envy 5540 e-All-in-One Printer using Wireless Direct. I can help you with that, however I wanted to confirm why you are connecting everything that way, as opposed to connecting the printer and PC to a more stable and reliable wireless connection through a router. Once I know this is I will be better able to assist you.

I have tried connecting my printer to my appartments public open wifi network(I don't have my own router or internet), and after it connects to the open network I scan for it using the software that came with the printer, and it is not able to find the printer. The open network usually has a page that you have to agree with their terms to be able to use it when using a computer or mobile device, so I don't know if that's causing the issue or if something else is. I did go into command prompt and typed in ipconfig or /ipconfig to see if the ip address was the same, but they weren't, even though the network name was the same for my computer and printer. So that is why I was trying to connect via WiFi Direct.

Alright, fair enough. I just wanted to make sure it was really the best option for you.
Most issues can be resolved by turning off Wireless Direct, restoring network defaults on the printer, and then turning Wireless Direct on. To do so:
- Click on the icon on the printer with the multiple devices.
- Click on Wireless Direct.
- Select Off.
- Click on the house icon to go back to the main screen.
- Click on the wireless icon that looks like a radio tower.
- Click on the gear.
- Scroll down to Restore Defaults and click on that.
- Turn the printer off.
- While the printer is powering off, restart your PC.
- When the PC is back, enable Wireless Direct.
Please let me know the results after following the above. If you are able to print, please click on Accept Solution. If you appreciate my help, please click on the thumbs up icon. Both icons are below this post.
