So I just moved to a student accommodation and not being able to connect my printer to the shared wifi! I am currently signing up for instant ink plan (it has worked well for the past 2 and a half years!! Used to stay in a private accommodation) and I really need it as I have tons of lecture notes to be printed. What can I do? Is the printer compatible with Hotspot i.e. portable wifi by EE? I really want to print my stuff and need this to be solved urgently.

Thanks.

Hello @xxlollipopxx,

It should be able to connect to the hotspot from your iPhone. Please make sure that you're close enough to the printer when you connecting to the hotspot.

In addition, you would need to ask the provider if it supports connecting a printer to the "portable wifi" unit. It needs to support DHCP and broadcast a network name using a 2.4 GHz connection.  Again, this connection is not guaranteed to work.

I hope this helps. 🙂

Hi,

Please talk with your Network adminitrator. From my understanding, many student doms, campus ... won't allow students to connect private wireless printers to networks.

Are you trying to invite other students to use your printer and expensive inks ?

Regards.

Hello @xxlollipopxx,

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support Forums!

I understand that you moved to 'student accommodation' and are not able to use Instant Ink. I will certainly do my best to help you and please remember to return to this thread and mark 'Accept as Solution' if I have successfully helped you resolve the issue. If you wish to say 'thanks' for my effort to help, click the 'thumbs up' to give me a Kudos.

The reason you're experiencing problems is because of the type of network you have at the university. You're on a large network with limited access. The printer requires internet access and needs to stay connected to the server to use Instant Ink.

In addition, if the printer is connected to the network, everyone on the same network will be able to print to your printer (leaving your printer vulnerable).

I understand the need and want to use this program while at school, however, your current arrangement is not ideal.

If you insist on using Instant Ink, you can try using a mobile hotspot to connect the printer to Web Services for Instant Ink. This type of connection is not recommended, as it can cause replenishment issues and is not a stable connection. You would need to connect it once a day to the hotspot to connect the printer to the server to send updates.

As for printing is concerned, I recommend that you a USB connection or Wi-Fi Direct (with security).

I hope this information is helpful. 🙂

Hi,

Connecting your printer to a network with many people means other users on a same network can access to your printer too.

Hope this makes sense.

Hi,

Yes, that's is a good options because it is your own network.

By the way, what is your printer ? Many HP printers support Direct Printing and there is only one communication between your computer (laptop) and printer. It has built-in security and people have to "break in" to be able to use your printer.
