Hi,
My wife's ENVY 4-1215dx has been having the same problem. The only way to get the sound back has been to reboot or disable/enable the IDT High Def CODEC driver. I also have issues open on the Windows Eight and Microsoft Community forums for this problem, and it isn't only HP PCs with the problem. Most people think it started after a recent update. The last M/S update on this laptop was performed on June 19, which is about the time my wife says the problem started. Luckily we haven't had a reoccurrence since July 9, but the laptop hasn't been used a lot lately.

I got the same issues. HP ENVY laptop with windows 8.1. Sound comes back after restart but goes off after a bit. Brand freaking new laptop with these major issues. This laptop has already been sent in for service with sound and video issues two weeks ago. I may just demand a refund and go with another brand.

TCP36,
I'm not certain if this applies to your network issue, but the following is what I did for our laptop. We haven't had a reoccurrence in over two months.
Go to Device Manager>Network Adapters and right click on your wireless card. Select Properties and select the Power Management tab. Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". Supposedly there is a problem with Windows 8 where it will turn off the card when it is in use.

I have the same sound problem on my HP Pavilion G6. No sound when I open Windows Media Player, and saying another device is in use. No sound when I open some e-mails. Windows update on my machine was 10 July 2014 and it seemed to be working before then.

I have a 1 year old HP Pavilion 17" g7 notebook, i5, 2.5Ghz, 8 GB Ram.
I first noticed this same problem LT a week ago.
I don't use sound often, so it could have been a problem a little longer than that.
I have no added hardware and run a fairly clean machine, so not likely that it has been caused by any software or functionality I added.
Eve with nothing running I get the "sound device is being used by another application"
I can generally get sound back when I reboot.
This is getting a bit frustrating.:smileymad:

Hi I have not tried uninstalling the IDT driver alltogether. However this fix seems to work for a period of time:
Go into your device manager. Under sound, video and game controllers select the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC (if you have it). Disable it, and then re-enable it. This should fix the sound for now although it is likely to go out again, in which the above solution should still work. I believe a lot of people are having this issue so be patient and they will fix it :):)

I'm having the exact same problem as everyone else it seems. Started just after the Microsaft update. I'm using an ENVY dv6 quad core.
Its driving me nuts as I'm a teacher and use the laptop in class constantly and without the sound it's become an expensive paper wieght.
This needs to be fixed by HP and/or Microsoft ASAP.
