Every time I play a video or a song on my laptop the volume starts off grand and then slowly starts to decrease and decrease until its nearly mute, its very annoying. It doesnt matter what volume I start off at on either the video itself or the speakers, it just turns itself down. Any help would be appreciated!

Hi, thanks for the help! The volume is working properly now but I think the sound quality has disimproved as a result. However it could just be the laptop, I haven't really used the speakers properly without issue before this.

HP Notebook PCs - No Sound or Distorted Sound from Speakers (Windows 10)

This document applies to HP and Compaq notebook computers with Windows 10.

Follow the steps in this document to resolve audio issues on your computer if there is no sound coming from the speakers, or if the sound is muffled, intermittent, crackling/popping, or otherwise distorted.

If you are having sound problems on a notebook with Beats Audio, refer to the applicable section under Audio problems on specific notebook models and configurations .

Try this first: Update the audio driver using Device Manager

Make sure the audio device is enabled and then update the audio driver using Device Manager as follows:

  1. In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.
  2. Double-click Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. If a sound device is listed with a down arrow , the device is disabled. Right-click the sound device name and select Enable to re-enable the device.

Figure 1: Enabling a disabled sound device

  1. With the sound device enabled, right-click the sound device and select Update Driver Software.

Figure 2: Update Driver Software selection in Device Manager

  1. Click Search automatically for updated driver software.

Figure 3: How do you want to search for driver software

  1. Windows checks for and installs any updated drivers found. The window displays whether the computer already has the latest available driver or if Windows was able to successfully update the audio driver.

Figure 4: The best driver is already installed

  1. If a window opens asking you to restart the computer, restart the computer.
  2. Test for sound. If you cannot find a driver or the audio problem persists after using Device Manager, continue to the next section.

Step 1: Perform a hard reset

Try a hard reset to resolve audio issues on your notebook. For instructions, see Performing a Hard Reset .

If the hard reset did not resolve the audio issue, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Test external speakers or headphones

If you are using external speakers, they might be faulty. Try using another set of speakers, or a pair of headphones, with your computer. If the second set of speakers or headphones produces sound without problems, the first set of speakers is faulty.

If the same audio problems are present in both pairs of speakers or headphones, continue to the next step.

Step 3: Using the troubleshooting tool in Windows

The audio troubleshooting tool in Windows can automatically fix common audio recording and audio playback problems with your computer. Run the troubleshooting tool using the following steps:

  1. In Windows, type find and fix audio into Search.
  2. Select Find and fix audio playback problems or Find and fix audio recording problems from the Search results.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Select the device you want to troubleshoot and click Next.
  5. Wait while the troubleshooter detects problems and makes changes.

NOTE: For detailed information about the troubleshooting, click View detailed information in the troubleshooter window.

Click Close.

Figure 6: Troubleshooting completed

  1. If a recommended action is displayed, select Apply this fix, or Skip this step to continue to search for other problems.

If the audio problem has not been resolved, continue to the next step.

Step 4: Setting speakers as the default audio device

After using the troubleshooting tool, return the system speakers to the default mode:

  1. In Windows, type sounds into Search. Select Change system sounds in the Search results.
  2. In the Sound window, from the Playback tab, select your playback device, then click the Set Default button. If only one Playback Device is listed, it is set to default automatically.
  3. With the default Playback Device selected, click the Configure button.

  2. If sound is missing from all or one of the speakers, or if the configuration type was changed, continue with speaker setup by clicking Next. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the speaker setup.

Step 5: Updating the audio driver

An updated audio driver might resolve the problem if the computer is experiencing sound problems after upgrading the operating system, or the computer is experiencing sound problems in a particular software program. Try the following options in the order presented.

Update the audio driver from the HP website

  1. Go to the HP Software download page .
  2. Search for your model number. For example, p6230f or 600-1050uk.
  3. Select the version of Windows the computer is using.

Updating the audio driver with HP Support Assistant

Use the steps in this section to update the audio driver with HP Support Assistant.

NOTE: Before using the HP Support Assistant, be sure you are using the latest version. If you do not have the latest version, or you are experiencing problems with HP Support Assistant, see Download HP Support Assistant .

  1. In Windows, search for and open HP Support Assistant.
  2. From the My devices screen, select Updates.

Your computer probably uses Realtek Audio Codec or Creative Audigy software. Download and install audio drivers from one of the following sites:

Test for sound. If no drivers could be found and installed or the audio problem persists after the update, continue to the next step.

Step 6: Restore or reset your computer

If you have tried the troubleshooting steps and your sound is still not working properly, try restoring your computer. Computers that had functioning sound in the past can be restored back to that point. Use the steps in HP PCs - Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 10, 😎 to restore all the system files back to a time when the sound was working properly.

Alternatively, reinstall the operating system by performing a push-button reset. For instructions, see HP PCs - Microsoft Push-Button Reset (Windows 10) .

Audio problems on specific notebook models and configurations

If one of the following sections describes your computer, refer to the instructions in that section to resolve audio problems.

Notebooks with Beats Audio

Before upgrading to Windows 10 on a computer with Beats Audio, consider that the necessary IDT drivers might not be available for your computer model. Upgrading to Windows 10 without a compatible driver for Beats Audio can cause one or more of the following symptoms:

  • A red X displays on the IDT icon in the system tray.
  • Stereo Mix does not work and you are unable to record audio played on the computer.
  • The DTS or Beats interface for customizing EQs does not work. You must uninstall the DTS or Beats audio applications from Control Panel, under Programs and Features.
  • The DTS or Beats application does not install on the computer.
  • The communication headphones feature does not work.
  • You are unable to choose the playback source for Skype, or play music.
  • There is an audible noise when recording audio through the line-in jack on a docking station.
  • The Function key does not work.

To resolve these issues, install a Microsoft audio driver for Windows 10 using the following steps:

NOTE: Beats Audio functionality will be lost if you uninstall the IDT driver and install a generic audio driver. If you choose to keep the IDT driver, Beats functionality will remain, and the problematic symptoms will persist.

  1. In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.
  2. Double-click Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right-click the IDT High Definition Audio device and select Update Driver Software.

Figure 12: Update Driver Software selection in Device Manager

Figure 14: The best driver is already installed

  1. If a window opens asking you to restart the computer, restart the computer.
  2. Test for sound. If the audio problem persists after replacing the driver, use the other steps in this document to troubleshoot.

Step 5: Run the Audio test from the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI)

The Hardware Diagnostics Audio Playback Test checks your system to make sure the audio device is functioning properly and tests the functionality of the audio subsystem, including audio controllers and codecs.

  1. When the Audio Test is complete, the results are displayed on the screen. If the audio fails the tests, a failure ID will be provided. Write down the information so you have it available when you contact HP Customer Support. The information is also available in the Test Logs, on the Diagnostics UEFI main page.
  2. If the audio test passes, return to the Main menu to exit and restart the computer.

Restore your computer

If you have tried the troubleshooting steps and your sound is still not working properly, try restoring your computer. Computers that had functioning sound in the past can be restored back to that point. Use HP Recovery Manager to restore all the system files back to a time when the sound was working properly.
