HP ENVY 15-u010dx x360 Convert
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am receiving a battery alert /capacity warning every time I boot up my computer. I ran the battery diagnostics and a few of the battery details came back as follows:

Charge capacity: 9%

Battery status: Very Weak(71)

When plugged in battery charges to 100% but only lasts 20 minutes before battery is completely drained again after being unplugged. I purchased this laptop only 17 months ago!! Please advise.

Battery replacement is on p. 31. It requires pretty significant disassembly and you have to be a little careful.

I think maybe $50-75 would be fair for opening it up and replacing the battery. Don't be afraid to negotiate.

Buy the battery from amazon.com and take it to the repair shop. They will mark it up if they procure it for you.

Hello @xsJenn,

Welcome to the HP Support Community! I read your post and wanted to reach out to help you!

Based on the results of your testing of the battery,  it would appear the battery is nearing the end of its functional life as the 9% it reported is based on the original charge capacity.

You may find this information useful in improving the battery performance and possible prolonging the life of the current battery.

I don't understand how the battery is at the end of its life? The computer is practically brand new, and is not even used weekly.

Hi @yannext,

Thanks for getting back to me.

There are many factors that can contribute to how long a battery lasts. I have found this HP document has very detailed information on Lithium-Ion battery technology.

Since you mentioned in your initial post that you are getting the message about the battery each time you boot the system, HP has a document which will explain the Battery Alert you are receiving.

I hope this has clarified things further for you.

Thanks!

17 months is a bit short but not an abnormally short life for the battery. Somewhere between 18 and 36 months is normal. As stated, it varies a lot from battery to battery.

You gave us some of the battery details above. Is there some reason you did not list the cycles? Do you have that information? If it is more than 300 cycles, that is very normal for the battery to be on its last legs.

HP Recommended
Cycle count at the time of battery test was 110. I have a picture of all the results please let me know if this would be helpful or I could type them all out here.

Either way it is helpful. Cycle count is not very high. It seems to me that the battery likely has one or more dead cells. It does happen. The batteries are never warranted for more than a year. Even if you buy the extended warranty it will not cover the battery. Accidental damage protection, which is pretty expensive, does cover the battery.
